Im not 100% sure if this should be here or in OEM tech...but since it has to do w/aftermarket wheels....:D
I was having mass problems with my brakes...I was on the verge of rebuilding my caliper, or getting a new one...when me and my buddies discovered something.
I had 3 hubs from the old style (90-) and since I wanted to use all the same year stuff, I put them on. Well the left side was brake dragging w/the new thick pads I had...So I put on some half worn pads, to gain some clearance, and that didnt work...The brakes werent dragging horribly though, just enough to make it pull to the left and to brake steer a bit. HOWEVER, after I brought it home after driving only a few miles...it was BURNING hot...I mean really hot.
That's not good, so we ripped it apart again and were looking at everything, I tried the 3rd hub I had, (again w/the 90- style) and...same problem.
The tire wouldspin freely for about half a revolution, then it would brake drag...wtf?
So we looked at the hubs, and discovered that the 2 that we were using on the left side, had a bunch of shoulder on the stud...so we took apart the right side, it didnt have that shoulder...
So I had a spare 97+ hub, without that shoulder, and we bolted it on the left side, and it now works...
What was happening is the steel wheels I have werent mounting flush to the hub, they were mounting to the shoulder on the stud...allowing the rotor to move about an 1/8th of an inch....and sagging to the weight of the vehicle I assume (would explain why it would only brake drag half the revolution)
So why were my studs like this on that set of hubs? At least the thing is fixed...
Does this rambling make sense? :laugh3:  :D
