I'm kinda impressed at these pics of the new VW Touareg on Hell's Revenge. VW decided to have the official press realease in Moab. This particular one has a locking center diff and locked rear. Enjoy.

Rumor is, it walked right up Tip Over challenge without spinning a wheel.

Gotta give 'em credit.
I'll bet they had a heck of a good time.

I'd run it up HG and not think twice about it. Escalator on the other hand, I dunno.

Yeah but why do you need flex or a good ramp score if you can get through just fine without it? Don't get me wrong, I know the value of good flex but in a lot of cases, "it aint all that," especially if you're locked at both ends.
On another note, if VW brings their V10 TDI over here in the Touareg, which VW has already said it eventually will do (I'm not holding my breath though), that will be my next vehicle hands down.

they should have produced the AAC instead. V10 TDI, electronic diff locks, alot more ground clearance, and a bad-ass pit bull stance from the pictures.

Anything with lockers (and some without) can run on the slickrock. Let's take it on the Rubicon and see how much damage that 5" of wheel travel will get you with it's 2.5" of ground clearance.

That's not the point.
Any moron can figure out that it cant do everything a Jeep can, but at least they had the balls to try.
Kinda like when you were little and someone told you couldn't do something. You just had to prove them wrong.

Looks like they had a good time. I bet they got a little tired of hearing metal on rock though.

Interesting. Of course, I have to admit that the first time I tried Tip Over Challenge, I made it just fine - with 235's, a TrashLok in back and a NEGATIVE 1" lift up front. Can't say I did as well in later years, "beefed up" and everything!
They chose their obstacle well, but, I'll give 'em credit too - unless they helicoptered in - they had to get there. Even though HR ain't the most hardcore trail, it's not that simple either, frontwards or backwards.

Those pics remind me of my January 03 issue of Road & Track showing the Porsche Cayenne on Hells Revenge.

They look very simular, same platform? Of coarse VW needed to one up the competition by getting bigger air for those press shots!

Why is the tread so clean on the tires? Wait, I'm sorry. If you look REALLY coose you can see that "the bat boy" is riding shotgun.

If I were a guessing sort (never wheeled Moab but did wheel Ft Irwin in a Blazer with MTs) I'd say because:
A: the place is a freakin High Desert Canyon! Nuttin but dust & high-traction rock.
B: probably some rubber burnt getting it up there...
Those are company photos... of course the subject is spotless.
Does it threaten people that another vehicle besides a solid axle Jeep might actually be capable of an occasional trail or obstacle?
I think those new Things (pun) are HOT

AWE, You are nooo fun at all. Here in so cal, and I'm sure many other areas,The are modified swing axle Bugs that are awesome.
But come on now, we all know that no-matter what they may be able to do, they will do most of their wheeling in the Mall parking lot. Truth be told, I would be most interested in the Audi version.
Remember the AMC Eagle? It got it's fair share of laughs. Why would any one need a 4WD statiom wagon? Huh? Given the choice over an H2, thats a no brainer. the Vdub.
But you really CAN see the bat boy riding shotgun!!!

Yes they were jointly designed (shared platform).

I think it is great that they are building that car, and testing it like that. Is it a Jeep? nope, but it has a market for sure. I bet they had fun testing it too.
As to why people would need or want a 4x4 car or station wagon? The needs vary. VW and other manufactures have been building them for awhile.
When I lived in Germany, I had no real need for a Jeep, was in to Go Fast cars then. :) VW was making a Golf Country.. 4X4, lifted, some sort of subframe... they where cool, and I wanted one.
I eventually had a used MB wagon. It was 4 wheel drive, and was great for get-aways to go fishing etc... as well as frequent winter trips to Garmisch, and Innsbruck.
Rubicon or Moab? naw, I would not have even thought about it. :) Fun cars though.... but certainly not a Jeep.
