With temperatures getting up into the mid-90s here, I've been trying to figure out a way to keep my XJ's interior a bit cooler. The A/C blows ice-cold, but the problem is that the roof itself does a pretty good job of retaining heat from the sun. It occurred to me that Land-Rovers came with a factory safari roof option (photos of one with it are here (http://www.skytoprover.com/64110sw.htm)) - basically, it's a second roof that sits about half-an-inch over the regular roof, thus shading it.

Has anyone here attempted anything like this on an XJ? It looks like it would be a pretty straightforward job - get some sheet aluminium, cut it to shape, and bolt it down to the gutters. Note that I'm not looking to make it a load-carrying platform, just to get the sunlight off of the roof directly.

I saw one when I lived in Phoenix - guy used plywood to make a load-carrier floor and painted it white. Said it kept the temps down...Doing the same with the aluminum oughtta work too I suppose.
