Speedometer pinion (gear)

1988 231 Transfer case. Non-electronic. Vacuum I think.

I have just installed a new speedo gear aka Pinion. The marks for lining up the correct set of gear teeth are on the cable side that the gear slips into, but I can't find one around the hole on the transfer case. There are marks for the fork that holds it in the transfer case. Do I use those marks to line up the tooth set ? If so, do I use the upper or lower mark ? No little dots like the newer Transfer cases.
I did do a search and they didn't answer my question.
