so,

NCAA sports are college kids participating in sports at a lower level... than professional and have strict rules and all that...

what about say 4x4?

it would be cool to have a NCAA sport inwhich schools compete...

there is the mini-baja (http://students.sae.org/competitions/minibaja/), but most times that is only engineering students...

it ain't gonna happen. not nearly enough interest or funds amongst college kids.

mini-baja is pretty awesome though, several of the teams post buildup threads on Pirate.

Beej, ? i didnt know that canadians http://www.midwestxj.org/forum/images/smiles/drunk.gifIts a simpson's reference, to when Homer tried to play a banjo with a cobra to get in the Guinness book... And of course wehttp://www.midwestxj.org/forum/images/smiles/drunk.gif. What else is there to do in the igloo in the dead of winter? Nothin to do but crack open a bottle of mooseshine...

(Edit: it was a very feeble attempt at humor. Didn't mean to 'gay up' yer thread! :laugh3: )

I am on the SAE mini baja team here at NC State, even though it is open to all majors, myself and 3 other guys, all MEs, are the only ones who do most(95%) of the work. we also have a formula SAE team, and up untill last year, a ledgends racing team.

Our car is comming along slowly this year since we spent 3 weeks moving our shop to a new location. I will put some pics/specs of it up when we get to the rolling chassis stage (mid next week i hope)

Man, that rig of the month looks dangerous. Open top, no shoulder belts and no roll cage.

when i was in high school, a loooong time ago, a bunch of us non-conformist types talked the coach into letting us do "fishing" for PE.

we set up targets on the field and got all practiced up at casting, then got approval to walk to a nearby private pond and fish

(like that info is appropriate to this thread, heh)

I earned three semester/hours in community college taking Archery, Fishing, and Canoeing. Archery was 2 hrs/week during the term, the latter two each required 6 hours on a Friday evening, plus both weekend days on or around the water. We also had to watch 4 fishing videos - on our own time, before the end of the term, and write a page on each...

I've seen the Wolfpack cars in person, and those kids have it together IMHO. Instead of carousing Hillsborough St, the Baja team needs to plan a raid on the SAE team for that streetbike driveline...

Depending on the group you can assemble, and y'alls collective skill/motivation level, you could start gathering the like-minded folks & do things for & in the community, or volunteer to assist other local 4x4 clubs in their endeavours. While it may not gain any hours credit towards the paper, it could build 'life experience' and potentially great networking opportunities...

Use your imagination, and don't be shy about asking questions.

Woody

Believe me woody, with 3 weeks left of the semester, still without a rolling chassis, and finals looming in the not so distant future, hilsborough street is the last place you will find me.

I wish we could use the same powertrain (which is now turbocharged- new for '05) as the formula guys, but for saftey, the baja class cars are limited to an unmodified Briggs 10HP motor.

Wow, 10 horses... back in my day (graduated '01, so figure sometime in the late 90's) it was a measly 8.

The rules have changed along with the power boost. :laugh3: In 99, the NCSU car was made entirely of Al, but since then, the rules have changed requiring the cage to be built out of a ferrous material with strength comparative or better than 1" .081 mild steel. To keep weight down, we use chromo for everything.
