I have an 87 with a 242 tcase and a 30 in the front. For some reason it seems like the front axle won't disengage. The 4 lock light is on in the dashboard with it in 2wd on the tcase. I don't see any place for the hose to go on the axle housing or any hose for that matter if it is air actuated.

Make sure your tires are the same size/type as well and inflated to the same pressure. The 242 can be picky that way when trying to unlock from 4wd.

I can't remember if the 242 has the same Transfer Case Switch (vacuum actuator) that the 231 has on it.....I think it's the same, but someone correct me if I'm wrong...or if the 242's different. Anyways, I just replaced this actuator on two different XJ's and they both had the 231...but they had about the same symptoms as you're describing.

I've found that most autoparts stores...even the mom and pop ones, keep one of these in their HELP section. The HELP part number is 49314, and the prices around here range from $6.99-$14.00 .... depending on where you get them from.

As for any vacuum lines going to your frontend....the 242 (SelectTrac) comes with a non-disconnect frontend...so there aren't any lines to it. Unless somebodies changed the axle out for some reason.
