NP231 tail cover?

I bought my 231/SYE slightly used from a TJ driver. The tail cover has a brass plug where the shift rail goes into. On the AA kit, the removeable plug's not there and it's a solid casting.
I resealed my t-case today, and I must've tightened the plug too far in as I couldn't shift into 4WD. I loosened the plug a few turns, and it works great now.
What's the plug for, and why do some SYE kits not have one on the cover? :wierd:
TIA!

I figured that, but why an adjustable plug anyway instead of being solid like the other kits?

The plug is where the earlier mode switch went!

Ahhh...that makes sense. So I'll just leave the brass plug adjusted properly and RTVd.
Thanks Ron.

In my JB instructions it talks about some units needing to have the shaft groung down some.
