View Full Version : Ring gear/detroit seized up tight

This isn't my truck, I'm trying to help a buddy out. I feel bad because I have the same set-up on a different Jeep & am unable to offer any solutions.
1989 MJ w/ a corporate 14-bolt & Detroit. He was flat towing it w/ the rear d-shaft out & all of a sudden both rear tires locked up tight. He pulled the axleahafts out, & then free'd them up so he continued on his way, thinking maybe he broke a gear tooth, (jamming it), or seized the pinion bearing. We pulled the cover off, & everything looks fine. It appears that the pinion would rotate if it wasn't bound up by the seized ring gear. All the teeth are in place, & the carrier bearings appear to shiny & unbroken. A pry bar will not move the ring gear more than a tiny fraction of an inch (maybe 1/32"). My next move is to pull the carrier/ring/locker out & inspect further, but man, of course it just snowed a whole lot & no garage in sight!
Any suggestions?
Thanks, Scotty

Bearings are purchased in a shiny state, so to me if they're still intact and not burned (still shiny) then they're cool. Also, when you install a Detroit you toss the spiders, the carrier is replaced & you no longer have spider gears. Any ideas?

Oh yeah, it's definitely the spiders. Afterall, we all know how the spider gears have a habit of locking up in Detroits.....

The tech sure is strong in this thread.
Idiots need not reply.

The problem is either in the transfer case or it's the pinion and ring.Look for a loose ring gear bolt or three.

It was a question not a troubleshooting tip. Some of you people really need to learn to read. A simple "No spiders in a Detroit Locker" would have been more than adequate. I don't own a Detroit locker, and therefore I wouldn't presume to offer any "tech support." I don't see any of you rocket scientists offering any useful info.

Question and APPLICABLE answer.

Does this answer your post, rocket scientist?

A simple "oops", from you, would have been more than adequate.

OT, absent d-shaft means t-case is not the culprit....duh!
Check the carrier bolts or perhaps the Detroit fragged internally.....hey, it happens......

Okie offered good advise and seams to me if ya dont know anything about what is being posted why the hell answer it in the first place?

Okie is right Id bet a loose ring bolt or 3. Also check the detroit for a cracked case, rare but does happen

Everything seems intact, & no metal at all in the case, so I'll check the ring gear bolts 1st. If one backed out on the front (pinion) side of the gear I wouldn't be able to see it jamming up against something. Thanks guys.
