I know.....I've searched......the millionth thread on this.....
I have A Dana 30 open 3.55 and a C8.25 27 spline....Going to 4.56
I know I need ring and pinion front and rear....but whats with the install kits. Do I need a mini of full master kit?
And someone told me that I may need a new carrier/s going from 3.55 to 4.56?
Info?

Bearing kit = very basic bearings needed to install the gears
Master kit = seals, etc...recommended for higher mileage axles or neglected ones. Generally a good idea to replace all this stuff since you're already in there!

Front you will, rear you won't. Carrier break for the 8.25" is way down at like 2.92 or something like that. No worries for going to 4.56.

since your in there and if you have the money, you could install a posi or full locker in the rear. This depends on what size tires you have and which chrysler. (27 or 29) You wouldnt want to put a locker in the rear with 35s. If you think you will swap axles later, save the money...IMO

the 8.25 have a 36MM hex opening used to adjust the carrier bearings if i remember correctly. either you blow the dough on buying the tool from jeep, or you make one. the 30 is just your standard ring and pinion install.

if you got it apart, you might as well take the time to do it all. all seals and bearings. how often do you really get into your diffs?

i don't know if your having it taken to a shop or you're trying to do it but don't forget the tools: dial indicatior, magnetic base for dial indicator, dial caliper, some sort of press (i did mine without using a big press but it made it very interesting to say the least) all the assorted wrenches, prybar. o yea torque wrench. i think that is everything but i prob forgot something.

Yup, the ring gear has left handed threads.... the shop that was doing mine let me fight with them for about 10 min, said I'd remember it better that way...then they told me.. but they were right.... :laugh3:

Couple things...
Bearing kits are for rebuild a rearend, not regearing.
Mini kits are for regearing and using your old bearings.
Master kits are for regearing with new bearings.

youll need an 0-50 inch pound torque wrench, bearing seperator for the press. for the 8.25 spanner tool you weld an axle nut with 26mm wrench flats to a piece of bar or square tube or something. I used 3/4" square tubing and I welded a T handle on the end of it, and I made 2 so that I didn't have to make 15 trips back and forth. I can adjust backlash from my position under the rearend. I also recomend having a copper or brass hammer for knocking the pinion out. this prevents you from marring the threads.
