Would this be a 4.2 carbed engine?

No such thing as 4.0 carb. What year? Yes, he needs gears. 33's with 3.08's will make 5th pretty much useless under 80 mph. 4th will be marginal under 65 mph. If its carbed, its a 4.2 and they typically feel like they hit a wall at @3000 rpm.

4.0 carb
Huh. If its a '90 or older its a 4.2 with a carb + high gears + big tires = slow. Time to regear.
