View Full Version : Rough stall

The other day I was driving about 50mph and all of a sudden when I tried to accelerate a little bit more, my 95 XJ Sport started going through sporadic rpms and then finally got to the point where it was going to stall (luckily I was able to pull it off the road first). When this happened, the entire vehicle really surged. Before this happened, I remember pushing the gas to accelerate gradually and the engine wouldn't increase in speed. Anyway, I gave it a minute and it started right up. I just changed my plugs/wires/rotor about 5 months ago, the airfilter a month ago,and I had plenty of gas. Also, I changed the fuel filter about a year ago.

This almost reminded me of when my CPS went bad and I had to get it replaced at the dealer two years ago. I checked under the hood and all of the connections seemed okay. I know the reason for the un-acceleration and stuttering could be due to a lot of things, but does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

Matt

Hmmm... I've had similar problems for a while now. I finally figured out that in my case it is wholly or partially due to a bad EGR valve. Now I just gotta find one at a reasonable price.

If nothing else it's a possibility to look in to. If you do a search for "Stalling" or "EGR Valve" and read some of the symptoms, you may find some more posts that can help you. Good luck.

Last summer on various boards, I heard a lot of noise about the 95-96 fuel pump. Seemed to be a rash of failures. Recently one low fuel pressure problem, turned out to be a corroded rubber tube from the fuel pump (was dumping half the fuel back into the tank). The indicator (tip off) seemed to be, small black pieces of rubber in the filter, that could be seen when the filter was dumped (emptied) and low fuel pressure at higher RPM`s.
Did you try retrieving the trouble codes from your computer? Did you get a trouble light? A faulty 02 sensor, could also cause a lean or fuel starved motor. A severly faulty 02 sensor, would probably force the computer into limp home mode.
Just a couple of ideas.
