Just noticed lately that Mobil has "redesigned?" their synthetic line and now carries one that will last between 7500 and 15000 miles.

Sine you ARE the oil GURU...your opinion is wanted. I have to change oil in about 1 week.

I notice the price difference is not that much either.

I wonder if the new oil is even a new design or just marketed as such.

One of my co-workers' Porsche Boxster recommends Mobil 1 synth from the factory on a 15,000 mile change interval.

Of course that is far from a run of the mill engine.

I noticed it too, couple of months ago, my buddys oil rack in the shop went from blue, green, red top bottles to a regular rainbow with a plethora of different colored caps including a yellow top suv truck oil. I'll just stick with my green top 10W30 that goes on sale at walmart every now and then in 5 quart containers and is carried in stock at Sams club. Noticed about a year to two ago it got darker, bout that time they had the hoorah going on with castrol and the other 'synthetic' makers... Part that scares me is the accounting guy saying to the CEO 'we need to increase the profit margin without increasing the prices', THAT scares me....

There is ONLY 2 ways, other than creative accounting, to increase profit margin without price increases....

1.) cut labor/maintenance...or
2.) cut corners....hmmm which did they choose ?

Remember Red, if they have the API seal on them then there mandated by the goverment to meet certain performance requirements. I still dont think I would want to run my oil for 7,500 miles. Mabey 5,000 with synthetic and running nothing but highway miles.

Thats part of what gets me. Either its NEW or they've reformulated part of it. But to claim 7500, and 15000 between changes seems...well...ODD.

I don't think I'd go that long either. But I do ALOT of driving.

I actually just changed my oil today and I was wondering the same thing. I was looking at the 7500 and 15000 miles bottles and just couldnt bring my self to buy them. I change my oil every 3500 with the 10-30 synthetic from Mobil.

FWIW, I run 5k intervals with mostly city miles and the UOA numbers show that I could be going a good bit longer. I drive pretty hard too...

I almost went with the 15000 stuff for my last change, but I decided that I'd stick with whats worked just fine for the past few years, regular Mobil1 10W30.

Something interesting that I noticed while I was looking at the new Mobil1 lineup. The 5000 stuff is standard conventional oil, the 7500 is only semi-synthetic, and that only the 15000 is FULL synthetic.

Hmmm...

I do 10,000 mile intervals w/ full synthetic Mobil 1. Have done so in my Jeep for the last 25,000 miles and in my DD 2000 Nissan Sentra (4cyl) for 30,000 miles. I'm switching to Schaeffers on both next round for a few insignificant reasons.

Neither vehicle complains although I've been thinking of getting oil analysis on the Jeep oil after 10,000 miles just for s & g.

And ya know what? I think that's good because the government is there to help us and knows what's best. :)

I just bought a 5 quart jug of regular 10-30 for the ZJ and the 15,000 mile stuff for the wifes Camry. I change the oil every 7500 miles normaly anyway and when I change it on the Camry it still comes out yellow. I'm going to change the filter at 7500 miles though.
