I have a 90 4.0 with an aw4 which, from evertything I have been told, it trashed. I am going for a used unit. Question being; how new of a unit can I go with befor things start to change?

87-90 will be the same. 91-96 will be very close but you'll need the t-case with it since they changed to 23 spline. The overdrive also changed from .705 to .75 for '91, but that's probably not a big deal.
