my sisters fiance needs a new tranny for his 89 xj and he found a 94 tranny can he put that in his 89?

Automatic or manual?
The 89 probably has a 21-spline input shaft for the transfer case. The 94 will definately have a 23-spline input shaft. So the transmission and transfer case may not mate up. If you can get the 94 transmission and transfer case together, then you're good to go.
