ok, the d44 i am building came with 3.07s
i am putting either 4.10 or 4.56 in
i bought a new case, 3.92 and up
i bought new bearings for the case
the new bearings fit the case, but not the axle
the old bearings, on the old case fit the old case and axle, but not the new case

wth is going on?! desparately needing some help here

*the axle is a 79, out of a k10, no BOM or any other info is stamped anywhere on the axle

Does the cover of your 44 look like this?
http://coloradok5.com/techpics/gm10bolt85in.jpg
That's a 10 bolt.

In your other thread, Brett posted that a 79 had a 10 bolt front, not a 44.

How's the GM passenger side diff working for you?

My thought exactly.

Edit: If you Sierra chapter youngin's keep getting smarter, we're going to need to get some new youngins'.

Yeah, the dana 44 and 60 both have some straight edged sides (diff cover). The 10 bolt is a very common Chevy diff mostly used in the front, but also in the rear of later model K5's. It's know as the "Poor Man's dana 44". I wouldn't bother much with it, the dana 44 is a better all around axle. If you have the parts and got it cheap what the heck. Click on this link for a xj dana 44 pic and desc. Obviously you have a front axle, so it will not look like this exactly, just look at the diff shape, does it look like this or the pic that Phil posted (round cover)???

That was a good find by him. Wish I was that lucky with finding parts. It looks like he has a truss on that 44. Is that a good idea with the 44? Ive never seen one bend before, at least not on Cherokees.

It's a little overkill, but I would rather overbuild than underbuild. Breaking down offroad isn't run. Yeah, a free xj 44 is hard to beat. Well finding 1 at pnp for $135 isn't too bad either. :laugh3:

If a D44 is that good does the obvious factor of more is better apply? D60?
Is the D60 a bolt in or does it require narrowing / spring perches / etc...

i have a d44, it is not a 10 bolt

anyone have any useful info?

"How's the GM passenger side diff working for you?"

its working, or rather will be working great once i get the bearing problem figured out, great

a passenger drop 241 works real damn well with a passenger side diff

but really, anyone got any ideas?

What are the numbers on the race and the bearing?

The race should be 25523 and the bearing should be 25590. Those are NTN numbers, but they cross to Timken.

Both are for a 30 spline Dana 44.

that looks correct, however, i have a d44 housing...

is there anyway someone crammed something else in there? used different tubes on the pumpkin?!

the part number listed above for the race does not fit the race/bearing seat

im going crazy here

I think all newer 44's were 30 spline while some older ones (read OLD) were 18 or 20 spline

Yeah but he said '79. And the 79 k10's came with a 10bolt.

BrettM
March 7th, 2005, 22:10
so assuming it really is a D44 housing, I'm pretty certain there is no way to get a 10bolt carrier to work in it, but could possible just the side-gears fit, so someone put 28 spline 10bolt sidegears and shafts in?

CW
March 7th, 2005, 22:18
I think we need pics of the axle to really be able to help. If it is a 44/10bolt hybrid someone was really cheap or board.

Dude, if you've got 28 spline shafts you have a 10 bolt. The bearing surfaces are as you describe between the two,i.e. the race fits the housing, but the bearing does not fit the carrier.

44's came in three spline configurations from 1942 to present: 10, 19, and 30. Recently, you've been able to get 33 and 35.

NEVER, EVER, 28.

Your frustration seems to stem from an inability to accept reality.

CRASH

P.S. I'm willing to entertain the notion that some jackkass stuffed some 28 spline shafts and the wrong carrier into a 44 at some point, but that is pretty far-fetched. Take a pic of the housing and post it up. Better yet, look up the B.O.M. number.

All true, and he can't find a B.O.M. anywhere, which is enough for me to believe it's not a dana unit. I know some of them get to where you can never even try to make out the numbers, but they are still visible if your looking in the right place...........:lecture:

Even more reason why to listen to tech savvy gearheads that can tell ya what it is without even seeing it...

lesson learned?
make sure you know what you have before throwing money at it...

And unless you chill on the 'tude you're not going to get a lot more help...

Part of the ribbing you're getting stems from the fact that you tried to argue that it was a 44...

The right thing to do would be to suck it up and say:

"Dang... I Screwed up, you guys were right, sorry"

Instead, you decide to get hissy and tell them to fawk off?

Enjoy your stay

Dude, stow the "woe is me" crap. Nobody cares. You're not a damn martyr. You were wrong, you ignored one thread where it looks like people told you what you didn't want to hear, and you wouldn't give up the idea that you had a 44. Suck it up, keep going, and if you ask for advice, actually read the answers you get.

And chill with the F-bombs. Just because they're not ccensored, doesn't mean using them makes you cool.

Actually, I find it hard to believe that you confused the two.

For future reference, ribbing usually goes hand in hand with good info. There was a good dose of both in this thread.

Hell, I even went out into the garage in my Sylvester and Tweety pajamas to get you those bearing and race part numbers!
