View Full Version : 36" iroks on a 2 door.....how much lift is necessary?

alright alright alright....just scored me a hella deal on a 97 2 door XJ. it will be here in the morning. i want to run 36x13.50 iroks. ive had several 4 door XJ's on 33's. i plan to swap axles and regear but thats another thread.......anyway.......on a 2 door XJ, assuming im handy with the milwaukee fender slammer (the reciprocating saw....not the beer)......how much lift do i really need? im thinking either the RE 5.5 or rustys 6.5 and trimming should be good. are there any good pictures of XJ's with this setup? or pictures of trimming the rear of a 2 door XJ? thanks in advance!

Be creative with the sheet metal and you could get away with 5-5.5" of lift.
The benefit is a lower center of gravity AND room for large tires!

Here's one with 38's on 3". He had to trim a bit :D

thats ridiculous.....it would look better and do just as good at 3" with 35's......

I had the RE 5.5" kit with 37" MT/R's. Just a little fender trimming and proper bumpstops will take you a long way. I did not have to rebuild/reweld the rear wheel wells either, on a 4 door. I just did the cut and fold method, like Jason did on his Bushwacker install article on his site, www.jeepin.com

I'd imagine that thing is for strictly mud. You need big tires in mud around here. Does anybody have info on this(engine, axles, etc...)

All stock.... he posted the specs on jeep forum, or lack-there-of

It was from another forum. this is an exerpt of what the owner had to say about it:
"1995 XJ 4.0 2 Door 3 Inch Skyjacker Lift. 38.5 x 11x15 Swamper Boggers. Homemade-gas, tran, motor & T/C skid plates,front bumper and sidebars." (from his sig)
"no special axles. a lot of cutting. right now i i have evrything cut and i just need to fix metal. on the fire wall there was a wiring harness thing but that is no longer there. i moved my winshiled wiper fluid tank inside the jeep, my battery inside, elimintated the coolant resevoir. i use this thing for mudding so i have my bump stops extended. the front rubs when i turn all the way. also on the front i had to make a support or stabalizer or whatever you want to call it since the old wheel well actually held the pressure front the coil spring pushing up on it. as for the wheels they are normal rock crawlers...." (from post)

Yeh that thing is running stock axles with 3.07 gearing. He said he wanted to upgrade to d44's and I was like WTF. He needs to be running something alot stronger in the rear

HELLS YEAH!! my jeep will be here in the morning....just talked to the guy delivering it....1700 bucks for a 97 2 door XJ....i stole that thing...anyway, i just bought a rustys 4.5" kit with full leafs in the rear, all brand new....without any control arms....i gave 450 bucks for it and it is local so no shipping!....comes with an adjustable trackbar, shocks, full packs, brakelines, coils, and a cool lookin sticker. im now in the market for some adjustable control arms upper and lower, and a BB to put on top of this kit to make it about 6-6.5" then ill be looking for some used 36" swamper TSL's, or IROKS!!!!!! ;) i just took out my sawzall a minute ago, put a new blade in it, plugged her in and made sure shes in good working order.... im gettin real excited!!! ( evil grin ) somebody hook me up on these parts!!! pics with the buildup will follow. in the mean time somebody post up pics and info on how you trimmed the rear of your 2 door XJ. :)

I hope your kidding about 6.5" of lift on stock control arms! Id spend yer money on a longarm kit before you get 36s. That thing is gonna ride like sh*t on stock control arms.

March 5th, 2005, 21:17
not stock control arms....adjustable uppers and lowers...dont want longarms...id rather have drop brackets but i cant find any.

i guess i could always buy new ones for like 250 though....thats cheapeer than adjustable arms.....matter of fact i may do that!!

March 5th, 2005, 21:27
oh sorry, I didnt realize that you were talkin about gettin adjustable short arms. I guess its the beer!!!
olivedrabcj7
March 5th, 2005, 21:50
think 6.5" on adjustable shorties will work decent? this jeep will be 75% trail and 25% street (to and from trails if not trailered to the trailhead) ??? i sure hope so....im not gonna have enough moolah for long arms...plus they have lots of drawbacks....
however i may go with the drop brackets with my stock control arms. whichever ends up being cheaper. if i can find some adjustable uppers and lowers for cheaper than DB's and braces then thats the route....if not then drop brackets it is!

Most people that have DB's have aftermarket CA's. I have DB's w/braces, RE fixed SF lowers and SF ADJ uppers. People get the DB's t get rid of the crappy angles the lift gives, not so they can use their stock arms............ :wierd:

Usually whenever people talk about 36s, "cheap" usually isn't in the same sentence. What are you doing for axles and gears?
olivedrabcj7
March 5th, 2005, 22:33
8.8 rear lock right, stock d30 front open, 4.56's all around
woody431
March 5th, 2005, 22:35
Why not do 4.88's? You can run them with the 8.8/30.
olivedrabcj7
March 5th, 2005, 22:38
i thought 4.56 was the tallest you could go with a 30...maybe i will go with 4.88's then....i want to leave the front open for ease of turning on tight trails and that axle isnt exactly beef either. ill swap in somethin better when i get sick of breaking it. lol

I just got off the phone with him and he said they ran codes on it this morning and it has a bad o2 sensor....Apparently the guy delivering it said it was "hesitating" and acting like it was between 3rd and 4th gear. So he freaked out and went back. He also said it was doing fine at 70+ mph and at 60 and below but right around 65 is when it would do that. He said the transmission has new fluid in it and its full. My guess (or hope) is that its the bad o2 sensor and the computer didnt like the readings so it was trying to adjust for it and making it run crappy. any other thoughts?

After 32's or 33's, you step beyond cheap. 31's and a 3" lift of 2" bb is the definition of cheap and very versatile. How do I know? I was there, now I'm going with hp44/9" with all the goodies, 241 Rock Trac Rubicon T-case and 37" mtrs. 7-8" lift

Yes they are 8" skyjacker coils. It has settled down about an inch all around. The rear is 6" Bigoffroad leafs and an RE 1.25 shackle. The Long arms are made by me and my buddy. 1.5" tube with .25 wall and Aurora Rod ends everywhere exept the ftrame mounts for LA's which are johnnys. Front end is a waggy D44 with tacked 760's and an Aussie, the rear is a D44 from a ScoutII,trussed with a full spool. 4.88's, OBA (old AC) , AW4 with switch for 1-2 gear, exo cage awaitong interior cage, steel half doors,TJ flares Ramsey 8.5, homemade rear bumper, Rigidco front bumper, boat vents on hood, homemade rock sliders, belly skid from DPG,Camaro rear disc's, warn,15X8" steelies, hubs.some other crap.

you dont need the BB... 4.5" will do it..
check out my homepage.. I only have 34's, (they measure 33.5) and I am sure I could stuff 36's in there. I have about 4" of lift. the rear you will need to make a couple cuts and beat everything back with a BFH.. especially the rear lower. The front, just cut it way back, and beat the pinch seam over.
If its for the trails you wont care what it looks like.. but make sure its Inspected first (if you need that for tags)... but look at CheapXj's posts.. he has done alot with a little...
