Hi, I am intrested in getting this 84 jeep cherokee pioneer 2 door for parts. It had a 2.8 V6 motor. What gears would it have ? Also, can I swap 297 u joint axle shafts into the 84 axles ?

Any big diffrence between the 84 and 89 axles ?

Thanks,
Dan

GEARING
3.07 - used with 4.0L engine / manual transmission
3.31 - only available on older (pre87?) 2 door XJs with "Fuel Economy" package
3.55 - used with 4.0L engine / automatic transmission
3.73 - found in some XJs with the towing package
4.10 - used with 2.5L engine usually, and older XJs with the "Off-Highway Vehicle" package.

I know the V6 auto Chief I had came with 4.10s and a V6 5spd Pioneer I had had 3.73s. According to the owners manuals, those were the only ratios for the V6. (tag is on the axle cover)

You didn't mention what engine is on your 89'. If a I6 it would come with either a 3.07 (5spd) or 3.55 (Auto). If a I4 it's a 4.10.

The carrier in the D30 in 84 will fit 3.73s and up (4.10, 4.56...)

The axle halves should fit.

I have 2 84s and both have the V6 and both have 4:10

My 89 has the 4.0 I-6 and the 84 parts jeep HAD a 2.8 V6.

Sounds like it might have the 4.10 axle gears.. I'll go check it out. I am waning to upgrade my 89 gears to 4.10 from 3.55 and run slightly bigger tires
