coolant resevoir bottle??

oh
hey all i have a 1996 jeep xj and i took the coolant resevoir bottle off today and cleaned it out it had a bunch of gunk in it. what is this bottle for exactly?
 
It catches your excess coolant when it expands, then lets the system suck it back in when it cools down. Should always have enough fluid in it to be filled to the indicator lines.
