Other than pulling off a NP231 how do you know if it has 23 splines or 21? I need to replace the T-case in my 91 MJ and I don't want to go through the hassle of pulling a T-case off of an XJ and a PnP and find out it is the wrong one.

I believe early autos had 21 and late ones had 23. I'm not sure about manuals, they could all be 23.

The spline count changed in the year the 4.0 HO was brought in 91'. 91' and newer have a 23 spline, with the 4.0.
