in 97+ jeeps the headliner is material glued to some sort of a "formed piece". You remove the side trim pieces up above, visors, any speakers and lights and it drops (the whole formed piece) and slides out. If it's older, I think it's would be the same.

My 85 has the same configuration. It's one piece and you need to remove all the trim and visors and lights to get it to drop.
Which reminds me, I need a new one.

I would becareful when removing around the winshield some times the glue sticks to the liner.

My 87 was the same. I needed a screwdriver and a torx (SP?) head driver to remove it. The Torx headwas for the passenger hand holds. It did have 2 velcro like pieces (sticking it to the roof) at the front near the sun visors. there were also 4 metal tabs along the edges. Those needed to be bent down slightly. Remove the dome lights, disconnect any wiring (I had to remove the passenger side A-pillar trim to get to the vanity mirror bullet connectors). When it is ready, you have a nice rear hatch to remove the liner.
