I got tired of Goatman dragging my butt all over the country & making me trash my nice John Deere on every rock in every state, so it was time to build a dedicated rig. Hinkley came up with a rolled 96 4 door & I couldn't resist. My local Caterpillar dealer kicked in with the paint & stickers & the rest is history. We started this project close to 4 months ago & finally have it ready to get bashed for BOTW begining this next week. I couldn't have done it without the help from Scrappy & Jes's sawzall.

That's why I built the winch "cage". Spectator saftey comes first... :wierd:

Specs:
Front End
78 Ford High pinion front narrowed 6". Lengthend radius arms, ARB Locker, 5.38 gears, Warn shafts, Longfeild joints, Stazworks beadlocks with 37x17 MTR tires.

Rear End
Currie 44, spool, 5.38 gears, Explorer Disc Brakes, Stazworks Beadlocks with 37x17 MTR's.

Other
Atlas 2 4.3:1 T-case, Completely flat belly, still got leaves in the rear, LED light steering wheel, Kicking Stereo so the wife can wheel at her best & a bunch of other little crap that took way too much time to build & fabricate...

Yep Andy, them thar tires & wheels are a heavy combo, but with as much weight I've dropped I'm hoping the 44's will hold up. I flogged pretty good over new years in JV without problem, but time will tell.

I highly, highly doubt it. I even had to build in the slides out of the old front seats so that her short scrawny legs could reach the pedals...

Here's a pic showing the amount we cut in the begining during a mock up stage. WE actually cut up more to just behind the front seats, but left the framerails the same length. The rear seat is 36" wide & fits my 6 & 11 year old boys snugly. I wouldn't want to stuff 2 adults back there for long unless their names were Loren & Andy...

Street legality is a relative term... It is registered, tagged, & smog legal. I've got some big mud flaps to cover the rear, but the head lights aren't kosher. All in all I think I've got enough to maybe keep the fuzz at bay.

I kept the leaves in the rear for simplicity. It took so much time to get this far with it that adding the engineering to do a proper rear 4 link would have added another month to the build. I did build in upper control arm mounts into the tube work behind the rear seats to put links in later. The other problem is that a rear 4 link would have added another couple grand to the build cost. I dump enough money into it already. The jeep came to me pretty setup with the rear end, atlas, ORGS lift & so on. I tried to reuse most of the parts that came with it.

I'll get some under pics & post them when I get a chance, but my long arms have better ground clearance than Goatmans short dinky arms...

Nice design, nice proportions, nice execution.

It just looks right. Not the first XJ to end up as a buggy, but likely the one that will start a serious trend. You've shown the XJ to be an excellent foundation for a 4-seater buggy.

Brett... 3 words, get over yourself.:laugh3: I used leafs because I had them & couldn't afford the money or time to UPGRADE. the key word here is upgrade. You took a modern well engineered front coil 4 link front suspension & axed it for an outdated 19th century design & now you're trying to justify it to the world? :rattle:Just admit it when you're wrong. the damn problem is that "modern well engineered front coil 4 link" was engineered for 28" tires, no lift and a crappy axle. My truck's ability exceeds the goals I had in the build, and at very reasonable cost, so I am very pleased with my decisions.

It only gives me greater respect for custom link setups like URFs and Goatman's, but I can still have fun and camp next to Buck or Spider with the best of 'em.

Its not a whole lot of clearance, but it is what it is. The front springs are ORGS 3" springs with a 1.5" spacer. We figure the front sits about 6-7"s of lift. The coils mount on top of the arms, so figure 2"s or so. The rear are National 11 leaf 4.5" springs. Now they run 10 leafs, we removed the smallest one. Because they lack of wieght, the back is just a hair taller than the front.

Traction bar?! ha..... no. These springs will only see a little less than a seasons use. After that, plans are in for a linked rear. they should last. should is the key word. We feel confident they will because the shear amount of leafs in the pack.

Matt,

I'm running XJ rears' in my YJ flipped for the extra wheelbase. I really really advise a traction bar. Even with an s10 leaf spring or two there is no way Edit (I was^) able to control the axle wrap. That long side of the spring being up in the front will wrap up the second it sees any torque. With the stuff you guys run out in JV I'd prob through a traction bar on it. But I'm all for seeing how it goes as is. I'm sure loaded down with 4 passengers and gear it'd be a diff story then with 1 driver. Gotta post some pics of it.

*I'm gonna dissapear back into the darkness again soon :)

I'm gonna have to strongly agree, I didn't catch the first time that you said you had the springs flipped. as I'm sure you know, having the long-side forward will allow for significantly more axle wrap.

I hired Owl on as a consultant cause his rig is da bomb & his knowledge of fabrication is second to none. Those welds are as good as we could get the JB weld in there with our fingers. Owl says that the JB is better than the liquid steel so we went that route...

I know full well the axel wrap could be a problem & if it is than it is. I'll deal with it than, but it should work just fine for now.

Weeeelll.. since Matt is prolly not ganna be on for a week or so... I could tell you this.

HE DOESNT KNOW.. and he dont want to! We guestamated you could do something like this around 15k or so. He had ALOT of the parts before from the rollover jeep. atlas, arb, axle, lift, etc. In time, I worked 4 months, every day, 10 hours a day. HARD FRICKIN WORK. Alot of "well lets try this, oopps! Maybe not. How about this..." and so on. Both of us racked our minds most everyday during the tube build days for new inovative ideas. I mean you dont build something like this and now want it to look kick ass right?

IMO, the things that make it stand out among the others are this. Its a 4seater buggy, with ALL spares and tools to do the work required. Has a complete working STOCK dash with working GLOVE BOX! Has a stock center console. Those just make it different than most everything else.

Did any one notice the narrowing job we did with it?

Farmer, Scrappy....

I'm curious as to what led you to cut off the back half after chopping everything else away? (referencing the first "before" picture) Looks like it would have made a bit less work leaving the stock platform and using the original leaf spring locations rather than having to create new ones when you did the tube work. Did you do this to locate the leafs further inboard than the stock location? Is the new tube framework in the rear higher than the original XJ rear section was?

I think the rig is awesome! You guys did a helluva job!

sick, inboarded springs rock. If you got alloys in that 44 should be enough strength wise. 60 rear shafts are smaller than 44 fronts.

Troy, We cut it off because we inboarded the springs. We "frenched" them into the framerail. The jeep was a rollover. Upon close inspection the rear floor area was tweaked and the OEM leaf spring mounts were not the same. It would have taken much more tim e to repair the damaged area. Something we dicovered along the way was that by inboarding the springs we had no room for the gas tank to hang in its original position. In our first design, we wanted to keep the tank and the box low. But after the fact, we ended up haveing to raise the tank about 8"s Luckly we were able to even use the stock skid plate!

The new tube work is MUCH higher than the original. I would guess close to 6"s higher. It works out best like this because we have so much room under there for links, and exhaust.

IMO i think the tube back end worked out the cleanest and most stucturally strongest. Because of the high speed desert racing/jumping that the jeep will be put through, we doubled the uniframe. The back framerails are tied directly to the radius arm/tranny mounts by another "frame rail" over the floor and under the seat. worked real slick.

Here is a picture of the double frame rail i am talking about.

what are you talking about!? rear 60 shafts are typically 30 spline 1.31" diameter, same as D44, but full-floating.

About half way though the pics, my 2 yr. 8 month old son, sitting on my lap asks; "Daddy...him broke his Jeep?.......him fix it?" Well sort of... :D

Awesome job, the pics help you get an understanding up the amount of work that goes into something like that. Incredible!

Matt S.
February 21st, 2005, 21:56
Um we figure over 300 feet... or somewhere in there. mostly 1.75". But lots of 1.5" and some small amounts of 1.25". Some square here and there. And yes it was a lot of work.

Any update on how much/how little axle-wrap you have with the reversed leafs and what you did/are going to do about it?

Enquiring minds want to know.

The CAT is getting a 60 in the rear. Full float, 35 spline, 5:38 gears, with a detroit. All bought for a song & a dance from a buddy. I'm going to 4 link it with Rock equipments air shocks. The reversed leafs lasted awhile, but the wrap was evident & I bent one leaf getting winched backwards after a failed attempt at a steep climb because I ran out of gas.:wierd:

There's another thread on the rear 4 link build up on this forum... If there's any particular area that you want to know about than let me know. The first cut up & tube out took 2 of us close to 10 months. The rear suspension took a couple months of pondering & a couple weeks to build. The rig is about to go under the knife again for a new front end & suspension along with a little more tube work... :confused1

Wow, thats a lot of time that you have invested into this rig. Not to mention how much the tubing must have cost, etc. I would love to see the rear suspension build, im really interested in learning to bend tubing also. Any pics of that would be much appreciated as well. Good luck on beating the heat down there, i know that if its hot in Auburn or Grass Valley it must be horrible down past Sacramento.
