Its always fun to see the different dogs. Watched working breeds last night, DAMN! are those some big dogs. The Great Dane jumped off the floor a few times and almost tackled his handler.
And what else was cool was a story about some English Springers, and one of the dogs was named Samantha, just like mine!
So, any else watch the show at all?

The last time I took my Lab, Zandi, to the local dog park, there was a Great Dane (they really do look like Marmaduke!) A greyhound was tearing around too, unbelievably fast. The funniest thing I saw was a Labrador - Bassett Hound mix... all black with Lab ears, but short with a Bassett body, head, nose & tail.

I watch it every year. Part two is on tonight. I would like to go to New York some time and see it in person.

Possibly the worst movie I have ever seen. YMMV.
I do like the dog show though. I too favor the mastiffs.

Missed the terrier group.
Did the schnauzer place at all?
And, what group are Spaniels in, sporting right?

Not big into dog breeds, but the high school I attended had a weekend show once when I happened to be there doing of all things, "extracuricular" activities. The reason I remember is I saw what I think was a Irish Wolfhound that was leisurely stretching w/ its paws on top of a fullsize van. It was huge.

Yeah, it was a Neo Mastiff. Also debuted a Russian Dog that looked like a cross between Airedale and Poodle.
Coc ker spaniels are okay dogs, but I prefer the look and temperment of English and Welsh Springers.

Not all Coc kers are the same, the ones they breed for hunting seem to be a whole lot smarter than the ones they breed for show.
I kept a mixed pack of dogs (7), for thinning out the coyote population. The female Coc ker turned out to be the head of the pack, by popular election of the other dogs (have to ask them why). Was funny to watch all these large dogs (2 Weimeraners/nose, 2 Shepards/attack, one shepard/boxer mix/speed and a Malumut/to finish the arguement) look to her for instructions.
The female Coc ker could climb really good (go up a tree or a cliff like a cat), the Boxer/Shepard mix, could run down a Coyote, the Weimerraners could smell a Coyote from half a mile or more, the Shepards and the malumut just liked to fight.
Malumut might seem like a strange dog to bring on a hunt, but if the pack jumped a big cat (Puma or Bob), the really thick hair, made it almost impervious to getting clawed, coyotes couldnīt bite through the fur. Iīve had Pumas, cost me some serious vet bills, open up a dog, like somebody used a straight razor.
I appreciate a good dog as much as the next person, but really feel, they should concentrate on field trials, more than show. Breed more for talent than looks.
The Shepard/boxer mix was one of the better hunting dogs, Iīve ever owned, go figure.

There was the obsticale course event on TV a few weeks back and the water jump. They divide into large and small breed. I only caught the large breed. Somehow the Border Collie is considered a large breed. I think 9 of 10 of the finalist in the obsticale course were Border Collies. The other was a Lab I think. I think the Lab managed 4th. In the water jump, usaully a Chessie or Lab wins. This year a border collie won. I think it maxed the record be 1-2ft.

Thats one thing I always found interesting about our Spaniel, she was always the dominant one in a group. Dont know if it was becasue she was a mean old lady, or the fact that I never saw her tuck tail and run from something, but she was a tough dog when it came to dealing with other animals.
They do a lot of hunting with hounds around the eastern border of the state for bears and Mtn. Lions, but they always use the classic hound dogs, never seen anything else.

I've had alot of different dogs, usually big ones, dobes, german shepards and out of all of them the westie my wife wanted has turned out to be the best for us. At 11 years old he's still a puppy and acts like one, ready to play at the drop of a squeeze toy and the little nut loves ice cubes, specially when I drop them on the floor and play soccer with him. We figure he was a goalie in another life.
My other favorite is the standard poodle, good guard dogs and strong swimmers even in salt water. Trained with them at coronado while going thru silver strand U....

The Airedale was the standard military working dog before world war two. Then they seemed to be mostly Shepards. You see many different kinds of working dogs now, I guess its because the breeders have messed up the German Shepard breed so bad, it may never be right again.` The Germans really messed up the German Shepard breed here, somebody decided it was desirable to have the rear quarters lower than the front shoulder. Ended up with a dog that had weak hips as the rule, most become arthritic early. They have been trying to correct the breeding error for decades here, with no great success.

Arent they using Belgian Malinois for military dogs a fair amount now?
I still htink my favorite big dog is the Dane.
Our family friends have a Ridgeback/Dane cross, and that thing is HUGE! And mean looking to boot, but would die protecting their little girl.
