It will fit right?

The rear axle off a '96-02 explorer is going to fit my XJ right with no cutting gridning or welding correct?

Is it any wider than an 89 or 90 xj's d35?

I would like to run some larger/wider axles.
What gear typically came on the explorer in the years I specified?

No, you'll need to cut off the old spring perches and shock mounts and weld new ones on. Its actually like 5/8" narrower per side. They come with between 3.07-4.10 that I know of. If you search there is a TON of information on this swap.
