Does anyone know what the standard pinion depth for a hp D30 is?

There is no "standard" pinion depth. The hsg. needs to be measured w/ a depth guage, and the gear is marked for a variance from blueprint specs. These are both used to set the correct depth. That said, I believe they are usually in the .030 range. Its been a while since I've done one. And even then usually I just reuse the existing shim +/- gear variance to start with and go by the pattern from there.

From what i've read there is a standard setting from centerline of ring gear to face of pinion. I is some where around 2.345". I have found it for D44 and D60 in dana service manual but can't find the D30 manual online.

Are you trying to setup a new gear set? The number you are refering to is a blueprint spec. and is what you are referencing when checking pinion depth w/ gauge. It doesn't mean that every hsg. made matches that number. Thats why you have the ability to shim the pinion to compensate for error.

My old dana gear is marked +1 so it is .001 off from standard pinion depth. My new gear is marked with best running position of 2.344 if I new what standard pinion depth was I could compare to new gear and adjust for the +1 from old gear shim pack.

What brand of gears are these? Most gears are marked with a variance, like your Dana gear. +1 means it is +.001 from "standard" and it needs -.001 shim from "standard" depth shim to correct for the gear.

I have new superior gears. Instead of being marked with +/- they mark with the best running position so the only way to get the actual +/_ for this gear set is to compare to standard depth position which I don't have.

For example if standard is 2.345 and my gears are marked 2.344 then my gears would be +1 the same as the one i'm removing.

I found on Richmond gears site a .035" pinion shim "standard". This was in case you had no access to a depth guage or no existing shim from. I would reuse the existing shim and start from there. As you said, if the numbers your using are right, your new gear is the same +1 as your old one.

Thanks for the help. I've got articles for dana 44's that give those dimensions but i've searched for three hours and can't find anything on a D30. I guess it's time to get some sleep and try again tomorrow.
