translate metric size315/70r/16

goto google.com and search for metric tire converter.

internet search engines can give you almost any information possible.

Approximately 33.5x12.50x16. You take 315 mm x .039370078=12.40157457 or about 12.5". Then you take 315 x 70%=220.5. 220.5mm x .039370078=8.681102199 or about 8.7". 8.7" on each side of rim so it's 8.7+8.7+16=33.4.

Most manufacturers will call this a 35x12.50

[math lesson]

the first number, 315, is the tire width in milimeters (mm). To convert mm to inches, divide by 25.4. So 315 / 25.4 = 12.4".

The second number, 70, is the sidewall aspect ratio as a percentage of the width, so the sidewall is 70% as tall as the tread is wide. So, 12.4" x 70% = 8.7".

Since the overall height includes "2" sidewalls (tire is a donut shape), multiply the 8.7" by 2, then add it to the rim size (the last number) to get the overall tire height

So, 8.7" x 2 = 17.4" ; 17.4" + 16" = 33.4".

[/math lesson]

how is a 33.4" tire 1/2" taller than a 35" tall tire?

Maybe if you were measuring worn out MT/R's... our 35x12.5" MT/R's measured a full 35" tall mounted on a set of 15x8" rims.

forget (most) everything you've read above and just go to the manufacturer and check.

the same tire size by different mfgs (and in different models by the same mfg) will differ.

quick examples:

BFG TA 285/75/16 = 32.9x11.3
SSR/TSL 285/75/16 = 33.9x11.4

you can see the interco tires are an inch taller.

dunlop a/t 255/85/16 = 32.8x10.2
dunlop mud 255/85/16 = 33.6x10.8

mudders are both taller and wider.

having said all that, who's to really say that one tire is .3" bigger (big deal), as it will ultimately
depend on the wheel it is mounted and tire pressure, etc. but at least for shopping around i
found it useful to check the source specs.

FWIW: 35x12.50 MTRs are factory spec'd at 34.4x12.5, which is the same as a dunlop mud in 315/75/16
(but the yokohama mud at that metric size is 34.6x12). :wierd:

minor correction: The width number, 315 in this case refers to the "section width", not the tread width. The section width is side wall to side wall when mounted and properly inflated. The tread width on this size tire is probably closer to 10 1/2" wide.

A 315/70R16 MT/R is about 1/2" taller & 1/2" narrower than a 35/12.50R15 MT/R.

Paul,

I think that would be a 315/75R16

As Mike corrected above, MT/R's are 315/75R16, which are taller/narrower than 35's. Sorry for the confusion.
