My NP242 is a 21 spline and my truck is an 88 xj. Will the NP231 21 spline out of a 97 fit?

A 231 from a '97 should be a 23-spline

well that's what I thought too, but the 231 that I am picking up says its a 21 spline out of a 97. I double checked with them to make sure.

well maybe they have the year wrong then. but, a 21 spline is a 21 spline right? so it'll fit?

IIRC after about 91 they are ALL 23 spline. 231 or 242. If they don't know what year a vehicle is by looking at the VIN # and they are a wrecking yard, you'd want to find someone much more knowledgable. That is WRECKING YARD 101 for most of us.

from what I read, the 231 out of the 97 TJ 4 cylinder is a 21 spline.
