Thought I better get the head off my non-HO 4.0 reworked before I bolted it back on. It was a good thing I did because there was a crack between the exhaust and intake valves on the number 2 cylinder.

That's okay I thought, I'll pull the one off the dead 4.0 that's still in the XJ. I knew the block was cracked, but I was told this engine was still running good when retired. Well....., you guessed it, this head had similar cracks in two cylinders.

So, is this a common problem with non-HO heads or does it happen to all model years? My guess is there has to be quite a bit of heat to damage a head this way. My wife blew the head gaskets out of my old 97 Ford F-150 with a V-6 and didn't destroy the aluminum heads.

I have one more non-HO engine still running in my other parts XJ, but at this point, I'm just ready to buy a good one and not tear into the other engine. Guess I'll post in the wanted section and see what happens….

I'll check mine once i get the head off. did the motor blow out exhaust smoke before it died? mine did. I'm going to check for that and piston holes :dunno:
