I have been wanting to make a bumper out of a trailer hitch, and I think I found exactly what I want to do.

Guess I'll be doing something like this with the spare tir, tools and gear. I don't need two spares, so I guess extra parts will go on the right side. Very nice light weight floor jack!

I think I like it! I wonder how strong it would be? I've kinda been wondering about this for a while too, but I was thinking of making a total replacement of the bumper from a hitch- maybe if I tie the two together it will look decent and stand up structurally reletively well?

Wonder if you can still get fenders like that?

I'd probably add two or more of the tubes attaching it to the hitch. Maybe something angled out the end of the hitch. Making sure that it did not interfer with departure angle(hanging up on anything).

Rusty's does have those flares.

For the bumper/hitch, I've heard that you can mount a hidden hitch upside down IN the framerails and build off of that. Once I have a welder I might try it. I think it would make a pretty solid rear end.

Exactly what I'm going to attempt to do come spring...if I can't get it to work right by flipping it over I'm still going to fab the bumper and hitch into one piece to cut down on multiple mounts and weight.

JohnJohn- Sorry man, didn't mean to start your thread off-topic.

http://www.jeepinoutfitters.com/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=41# I can't really tell if this bumper has the recever mount built in or not. The xj does have a recever on it though.

That all the links I have, but I'm sure others have links to ones I haven't bookmarked yet. Also OLIMPIC 4X4 has recever bumpers, but the link on the Quadratrec site only shows the Wrangler bumpers. You might look around and find them. They are similar to the Tomken bumpers in style.

Have you considered "flipping" the hitch? Cut the stock brackets off, make new ones and then enlarge slightly (ok, a hair more then slightly) the frame rail opening and slide the hitch in that way. Weld nuts onto the bracket and the mounts end up replacing the nut strips. Then you can build up the rest of the bumper around that.

I hope your spare is a 33" unless you remove the backseat. IIRC a 33" is the biggest you can fit like that and keep the back seat.

Mike's right. Also in order for that 33 to fit, it has to lay flat.

"Very nice light weight floor jack!"

Costco had them in stock this last weekend.

Looking at the Hanneman prices these look to be a lot nicer that some foo-foo BW flare. They are more expensive but being fiberglass at least you can repair them.
