I think the bolt itself is 12mm but I am not sure on the length or thread pitch.

Get the stealership one. The hardware shop bolts are NOT hard enough.

I believe a grade 8 bolt form anywhere is a grade 8 bolt, so I don't think the dealership bolt is going to be any harder. It might just be an ease factor to go down there and say I need this, knowing you are going to get the right part the first time.

Wrong again, Patrick. It is not, I repeat, *NOT* a grade 8 bolt. It's metric, so it's a different scale as well. As near as I can tell, it's going to rate 12+ or so.

Torque spec on the bolt is 70+ lbs./ft. Metric 10.7 hard bolts twist off well before you get to 70. Don't believe me? I twisted off 2 hardware store bolts with ease. Yes, there were threads showing below the nut when it twiested off. Put an OEM bolt in, and torqued up nicely.

What are the ones that RE (for example) sends out with their stuff? My 2 years with the RE HD trackbar could be on borrowed time!!!

I don't know about the specifics, but I have twisted off grade 8 bolts there as well.....btw the oem bolt is usually free from the junkyard!

I have no idea what RE sends out with their trackbars.

I do know that you can find bolts that are hard enough. Not in any hardware store I've been to, possibly a specialty fastener shop. Easier to just go to the dealer.

Ditto on the dealership bolt...
Not a good spot to cut corners...
Same thing goes for the bolts on the rear leaf bushing-front end...

Thanks again Jeff!

Hmm guess I should change that bolt back to an OEM one then. i torqued my to 70lbs and haven't had a problem. But like was mentioned before I could be living on borrowed time.

This is crazy,10.9 bolt from Pep Boys for $1.50 = 10.9 bolt from dealer for $6.00???????
I also hate that most factory hardware uses extruded threads which suck for bushing/heim/JJ use!

Gladly pay the extra cash for something I don't have to replace every few years... or months... piece of mind ya know?

As far as same material from different suppliers...

Check with NASA... I think they had similar issues with O-ring suppliers :D

Six years ago I installed an RE trackbar with their 4.5" kit, drilling out the factory bracket per instructions. Even with an ample compressor, I could never get rid of that popping sound. Tried lubing it with everything, tried tightening it, contemplated drilling zerks into it. Nothing helped.

Last year I brought it to my alignment place for inspection, been going there for years, for $25 they did something, I think replaced some hardware and a year later still quiet as a church mouse.

Mind you, I installed the entire lift, splitting the 242 case for a currie sye, installed new leaf packs, the whole bit. But I could never conquer this problem. I think it'll probably be ironic that I'll manage to install tads and new r&p's with less problems than this goblin, at least I'm optimistic :paperwork .

Just some thoughts.

Except that I'm pretty sure that it's not 10.9, it's significantly harder.

I'll continue to use the OEM bolts on the trackbar, hubs and springs.
