You mean the hose to the valve cover? There is no hose to the engine block.

The hose you are talking about is for a problem we don't have here in Colorado. It prevents carb/throttlebody icing. It takes warm air from around the exhaust and feeds it to the intake when it is cold. Carb icing is the worst when the temps are just above freezing and the dew point is high, in other words high humidity. I've never seen it in Colorado other than flying in sleet but back east it can be a bitch.
