I have an opportunity to buy a 1990 XJ for $1500. 4.0, auto, female daily driver with 184K and excellent body and everything fully functional. Being new to the Jeep family, my only experience is with my 01. What do I need to know or look for on this one? Does it have an AW4 and the closed cooling system? Stuff like that I would like to know. Thanks in advance...

Depends on what you want from it.
If it is a 4.0 and auto you are fine. It will either have 231 or 242 depending on level of options. Both are fine and have their advantages/disadvantages. It has a Hi pinion D30 up front and most likely a D35 cclip in the rear (this is the weak part).
It will have the old cooling system (not so desireable), not Hi Output, and Renix fuel injection, also has the smaller break booster.
Still a very good start for a dd or off road only rig.

I love my 90xj! As 2extreme mentioned, the d35 is the weak link. Not hard to upgrade to an 8.25 or d44. also the closed cooling system can be a pain, but that's not hard to convert either. I've never had any trouble with the tranny, I rebuilt the engine at 205k just because, not cause I had to. My power door locks don't work anymore, my cruise control is screwy, other than that everything else is trouble free, even my a/c blows super cold. for what it's worth, it's not been a dd for about 3 years, trail only.
for 1500 bucks, you could build that into a real nice trail rig for another $1000 depending on what you choose to do with it.
have fun,
Dave

I have '90 also....good vehicle...would be even better if person that it had b-4 had performed better PM.. I did replace my 242 TC, seems someone changed fluid....with 80W gear oil....ouch. Did have to replace flywheel, was cracked to hell. Everything else is what you would expect on a 15 yr. old vehicle from New England. Can't wait for warm weather so I can get the body back to where it should. $1,500 not a bad price for your's have seen them for a lot more. Good luck with it.
