Arizona Strip BLM, NPS host open houses for public comment

St. George, Utah – The Bureau of Land Management and National Park
Service are hosting five open houses June 2-6 to gather public
comment about the preliminary management alternatives for the Arizona
Strip, including the Grand Canyon-Parashant and Vermilion Cliffs
national monuments.

Arizona Strip planners are developing management plans for the
monuments and the 1.7 million acres of non-monument BLM land on the
Arizona Strip. They are in the initial stages of developing five
management alternatives, and are seeking public comment on these
preliminary alternatives.

"We want to ensure that we are addressing all the issues and concerns
the public have identified," said Planning Coordinator Diana Hawks.
"This particular series of meetings is not required as part of
planning, but we want to keep the public involved throughout the
entire process."

Planners will use the public comments received as they develop
details for each alternative that will be in the draft Environmental
Impact Statement for the management plans. Once the draft EIS is
released in the spring of 2004, another series of public meetings
will be held to gather specific input about the details of the
management alternatives.

The public is invited to stop by anytime during the open houses to
gather information, ask questions, and express their views. Meetings
will be held from 4-6 p.m., local time:

June 2, Mesquite, Nev., Town Hall Training Room, 10 E. Mesquite Blvd.
June 3, St. George, Utah, Dixie Convention Center, 1835 Convention Center Dr.
June 4, Fredonia, Ariz., City Council Chambers, 25 N. Main
June 5, Kingman, Ariz., Mohave Community College Student Union, Room 106
June 6, Flagstaff, Ariz., Dubois Center Building 64, Fremont Room, NAU

Public comments on the preliminary alternatives will be accepted
until July 7, 2003, via e-mail [email protected], or by mail at
Arizona Strip Planning Team, 345 E. Riverside Dr., St. George, Utah
84790.
