Wis. Officials Capture Wandering Kangaroo
1 hour, 12 minutes ago U.S. National - AP
DODGEVILLE, Wis. - A kangaroo that went on a walkabout in frigid Wisconsin was captured Wednesday. But where the marsupial came from remained a mystery.
Sheriff's deputies cornered the 150-pound kangaroo in a barn after receiving calls for days from shocked residents who had seen it.
Officials from Henry Vilas Zoo in Madison, about 45 miles away, planned to pick it up and take care of it.
Zoo director Jim Hubing said the kangaroo would not have survived long in the Wisconsin winter. Temperatures in the animal's native Australia generally do not drop below the 30s.
Sheriff Steve Michek said some people who spotted the kangaroo were hesitant to report it "because they didn't want to be made a fool of."
He said the animal might have escaped as someone was bringing it through the county.
Mmmmm.... Kangaroo jerky

Awhile back the local law got their first "ostrich call"... a large male (that had gotten loose from a farm +- 10 miles away, several months before IIRC) It was cornered it in a backyard, and when it expressed it's discomfort... he was given a couple .40 sleeping pills. Someone had to dig a big hole that afternoon.
A longer time back (late 80s?) A moose made it's way (from wherever it is that mooses come from) down to metrowest Boston area. It holed up in someone's carport, and drew in a sizable crowd. Again, the animal wasn't acting nice, so the cop had to take it out... The crowd grew ugly. "Hey, he capped Bullwinkle! Lets Get Him."
At least the 'roo got a reprieve...

A few years ago, I worked as an Animal Control Officer...
One of the more memorable cases was trying to catch a Bobcat within Chicago city limits...
Area of Cermak and Wentworth...

"...trying to catch a Bobcat..."
So y'all never did catch it?
If not, I bet it made the feistiest sweet & sour 'pork' ever fixed up.

We kinda figured the kitty was intended as a "delicasy"...
With select "appendages" being saved for aphrodisiac recipes.
no different than chicken of the bush, tree or swamp I figure :D

Awhile back the local law got their first "ostrich call"... Funny you should mention this...
Years ago when my folks had their first police scanner (tabletop model), we heard during dinner one night a call go out to a nearby town's partol cop that a driver had reported a "giant chicken" was running alonside his car (~35mph) and looking in at him.
The cop's first response, understandably, was "he's drunk" - a giant chicken? But the dispatcher insisted, and the cop drove out to where the sighting was supposed to be.
A few minutes later, the cop is back on the radio, exclaiming that the aforementioned "giant chicken" was now looking through the windshield at him, and that it was actually an emu.
Seems that someone in the area was raising them for the meat, so they eventually caught it and contacted him, thinking it was one of his. It wasn't, and since they didn't know its medical history the guy didn't want it near its flock. I think a local zoo may have taken it or something, but it wasn't killed. Made for some interesting listening, though.
Too bad the police frequencies aren't nearly so entertaining any more...
