hey everyone....and merry xmas to u all and a happy new year also
having some trobles with my 4 wheel peel
simply i have none
when i put it in 4 hi the part time light comes on but no action
its a 91 cherokee sport
np231 tc and ax4/5 tranny
the four vacume lines coming off the tc end up bieng two by the time it gets to the mechinism on the axle
i can feel vacum out the side that is closest to the passenger side front tire but none out of the other side...is that normal?
aslo wondering if i can some how see if the sleve is engaging while the jeep is runnin if i had a friend inside settin it in 4 hi and back to 2 wheel
when it is in 4hi the front wheels dont spin but back do
in 4lo i dont get anything...its like its in nutreal...front and back wont spin.....iv had the 4lo prob since i had the jeep but the 4hi just started...was working but yesterday i got stuck 5 times in snowdrifts and the last time i got stuck was when i noticed that the front wheels wernt spinnin.
anyway i think thats all the info i have thats relevent
any help would b more then greatlly appreicated(christmsa killed the wallet so i have to try to do this one myself lol)

Make sure your TC linkage is adjusted. Also if you jack up the Pass side front wheel off the ground and spin the tire if the sleeve is "engaged" it will spin the front drive shaft back to the TC if it is NOT it will free wheel and NOT spin the front Drive shaft. If it does one or the other all the time you have issues.
You should have 3 lines into the vac motor on the axle 1. engadge, 2 disengage, 3. little green light switch thingy up next to the blower motor on the pass side under the hood

so if i spin the wheel when 4 wheel drive lever is in the 2 wheel position ...the tire should spin freely and when its in the 4hi position it should turn the front driveshaft...and if it dosnt turn the shaft it means the sleve in the axle isnt engaging?
i was also wondering if its possible if some moisture could get into the diaphram housing and possiblly have frozen cause i was doing some major muddin and two days later the temp droped below freezing.maby cause the sleve not to engage?
my linkage is all adjusted properlly
well thanks for the info
any other help would be appreacieated
also ...i only have the two vacume connections on the axle

I think the 91 has a somewhat different indicator light arrangement from the earlier ones, which had a third nipple on the vacuum motor that operated a vacuum switch, but I'm not sure how it does operate the light. Of the four lines at the transfer case switch, one will be the vacuum line from the reservoir, one for engage, one for disengage, and the fourth is a vent line that should dead-end with a little filter somewhere at the firewall. You should get vacuum from one or the other of the disengage and engage lines, depending on lever position, so if you're not getting it, I'd suspect either the vacuum switch or the lines. It is conceivable that one of the lines froze, so check that first. The switch is pretty cheap, and so if that is the problem you are better off than if it's the motor.

on the forl housing there is a switch similar to the back-up switch that operates the lihht....
i figured out the problem of no 4 hi...it wasnt engaging due to the faCT THAT THE FORK WAS BROKEN WHERE IT slides onto the vacume shaft....took one off an old parts jeep i have and tada....4wheel peel
nothing like it
speacially in the heavy load of snow we have just recieved....but i still have no 4 lo....still like it is in netureal....iv adjusted the linkage in both 2wheel position and 4lo position...i've manually put the bellcrank on the tc into 4lo but still like its in netureal...no strange noises or anything.....resigning myself to the fact that its internal....maby bent fork or sumthing?/....well i'll deive it like this till summer than lay it up and drive the summer xj....
anyway thanks for all ur help
