Cracked Bellhousing

I have an 87XJ, 4ltr, auto trans, 231 TC. On the belhousing, where the starter bolts on, there is a long crack that runs under and 3/4 the way around the starter.

I planned on removing the TC, Trans, bellhousing and replacing the bellhousing. A lot of work. Are cracked bellhousings common on the 4ltr/auto trans units?

I do not want to replace the bellhousing if I do not have to.
Any suggestions?

I cracked mine a couple years ago. I had it welded up by a local machine shop welder. It's cast aluminum and there aren't that many folks that will even consider doing it, but we use these guys a lot and it was kind of a favor job. You would most likely be better off finding one at a junkyard if you can get it for less than $80, otherwise explore your welding shops to find competent people.
