Oil pressure dropping

family XJ

NAXJA Forum User
My buddy has an '01 that the oil pressure gradually drops as he is driving down the highway. It goes from normal 40-50 and drops to 0. He shuts off his rig and lets it set for a minute and the pressure goes back up when he starts it, then it starts all over again. Anyone got any ideas, oil pump, bad sensor, pick up blocked?

Thanks

If there's no tappet noise coming from the engine when the oil pressure gauge drops to zero, that means there's still at least 13psi of oil pressure in which case, I'd blame the sending unit.

He wouldn't happen to be running a Fram oil filter would he? I experienced the very same thing on my drive out to The Badlands and found out later that Fram is having some "issues" with the filters collapsing or something like that. A new filter cured my trucks ills. :D Well, at least that particular ill. Even if it's not a Fram in there, I'd recommend trying a new filter.
Jeep on!
