My new XJ has the most wobbly stering colum you could imagine, is this common, a buddie said they have a tendency to do that any one have any clues?

I dont think youll find an XJ with tight steering. Not an older one anyways.
How wobbly are you talkin about?

Do you mean sloppy steering, or do you have a tilt column that's loose at the hinge? If the latter, try this:

well it is a tilt steering colum, and it moves a couple of inches in all directions

does the WHOLE column move?
if so, look underneath the dash, there's a couple of nuts/studs and some reinforcing rods you can check out.
if its WITHIN the coulmn, follow eagles links.
actually, there are quite a few nice write-up sites on the subject.
try searching for "GM saginaw column repair how-to" and combinations thereof in google.
