Man it seems as soon as get one thing finished something else goes wrong. Must be a jeep thing.

This is a 95 cherokee 4.0, 140,000 mi.)

THe engine stumbles (momentarily slow down or shut off) randomly at idle or under acceleration. It never completely dies or stalls. It does slow down or shut off enough to jerk the drivetrain.

I replaced some items that have never been replaced since I owned the jeep and items I've seen on here that have given people problem. Replaced the TPS and CPS and didn't fix the problem. I also checked the distributor and wires which are less than a half year old.

What else may be the problem?

Fuel pump humms like it always has even when it does its stumble thing.

Could it be? distributor coil.

I'm out of ideas any help is greatly appreciated.

This could really be attributed to a number of issues including vacuum leaks, plugs, wires, etc. But, for what it's worth, I did have a similar problem and found that replacing the ignition wires solved it.

Yeah I realize it could one of many things. Do you think it would be helpful to have a dealer do a computer scan? That would eliminate some things so I could move onto others. The check engine light is not on and no codes show up either.

I'll just keep lookin'.

Thanks

You probably just forgot to mention it above, but you did replace the fuel filter, didn't you?

I'd try a vacuum gauge next. Ignition problems will usually show up there, as well as possible vacuum/compression issues. If the problem is hard to make happen while standing still, you can get a long hose, and tape the gauge to the outside mirror and watch it as you drive. If the gauge does not register any change when it stumbles, look for a problem in fuel delivery.
