Just wondering if there are any trail runs this spring since they have opened up the back roads in the Wasatch range and Uintas. I would like to get as many XJ's involved to go have some fun. Let me know if any one in the Wasatch area is interested. THX

All you Utah guys go to www.rockymountainextreme.com for local trail rides. There are a lot of places to wheel that aren't well known.
I'll post some pictures from our Memorial weekend trip to Desert Mountain in a few days.

I tried out Providence Canyon in Cache Valley yesterday, didn't even make Mathew's Hollow before the snow turned us back. Good that there is still that much up there, we really need it this year.

Thanks for the reply. David B is going up to Mineral Basin the 7th of June, I am up for that. Talked to Forest service and there is construction up the mountain to mineral(one hour delays). Aspen grove can be faster for now. We can meet in Sundance parking lot @9:00am on saturday if that sounds o.k. with everyone else. We can talk about a chapter in Utah when we all get together up the mountain. So lets get some feed back on this and I will bring the camera for some fun shots.

Sundance? Where's that? The ski resort? How's 'Aspen Grove'? Rocks, etc. I need to check out my suspension and axle mods..........
I've always met at the Tibble Creek Res. parking lot for Mineral Basin. Nice call on contacting the Forest Service, though.
I think I know most everybody, already but am not acquainted with climbon or xjblue, the rest of these guys will spank my rig, so let's stay to Mineral Basin......

If you guys want to meet at Tibble creek res. I'm fine with that but as I said before they are doing reclaimation work on a mine up there and there can be up to an hour wait as they run big trucks back and forth. It's your call, what time do we want to meet at Tibble creek res.

We can. It's a matter of organizing it and getting people to take on the responsibility of leading it. I've considered, but working full time and attending two colleges takes up most of my time. Any takers? :)

It seems that June 7th might be too soon for some, but I will join David B and others who can go up to mineral basin on that Saturday. Tibble creek res. @ 10:00am June 7th, snow or mud let's see how high we can climb. I have white XJ w/4.5 lift and a wilderness rack on top I will be there. Also, I know the 20 year XJ event is in October but I was thinking of a pre-run down to moab August 1-3rd. Hope to see you all on saturday.

I'll plan on Tibble Cr. Res. at 10:00. I'll be accompanied by a white XJ - 4" lift/33's, red XJ - 4" lift/32's, TJ - stock/30's, and I'm in a red XJ - 8.5" lift/34's. We'll all be with family (wife and kid), hope that is all right with everyone. Bring a lunch!

The "Lake Bonneville" NAXJA Chapter.........I nominate David Barnhisel for Chapter Pres, all if favor?
We actually have plenty of local Utah/Idaho XJers to form our own chapter, we just need the dedicated folk to step up to the challenge of club government. Several of us that have been with NAXJA from the beginning have discussed this before, but it seems like we've all been too busy to move things forward (myself included). It just takes some time, but we should definitely re-hash the subject in the near future.
I'm gonna try and swing the 7th.

I made it through with some mods to my tie rod and a fender on my first trip with 235's. I think anything with 30-31" tires and up won't have any problems at all getting through the 'good rocks'.....

Both.........easy runs, but don't go barrelling through Forest Lake.....a little ranger birdy told me that can be a pretty stiff fine.

Greek.........very similar to Utah County speak....:D .......American Fork.....Immediately south of 'point of the mountain' in the Salt Lake Valley. Take the 'Alpine/Highland' exit (I don't remember the number) immediately after climbing the point of the mountain and head east until you reach a canyon. Follow the road up (through a pay booth{$2 or so}) the canyon and take the left fork road to 'Tibble Creek Res.'......there's a big parking lot up there.

Hey Jeff, yeah I'm still on stock gears, auto (3.55). It hasn't been too bad since I still only run a 31" tire (these Pro Comp AT's are more like a 30" though). I'm due for some new tires here in the next month or so and I'm still debating on whether I want to step up to a 32". I've seen a few of you kill a d35 with 32" tires so I may just stick to a 31". Picked up the new (used) 4.10 gears today (thanks Rory!) but won't be able to get them in 'til next month some time. Anyone got a d30 carrier for the taller gears layin around? :D

Well, based on your Jeep profile you should be able to run through these while reading your JP magazine and amoralling the dash, everyone is welcomed come aboard and have some fun. For directions: take I-15 south to HWY 93 or 11000 South on the Highland exit. Go east and just drive towards the mountain you will enter American Fork canyon as you come to a ranger station(must pay). continue to go east into the canyon until you come to the HWY 144 turn (left). Just continue to follow this road until you drive right into the parking lot of Tibble Res.

I went up to mineral basin this past Saturday. I did not try anything too extreme since I was not with any other jeepers. There is one set of boulders on the way up to the rock garden that turned be back. I am sure that I could have made it but I did not want to take the risk( I am running 33" with 4 " lift, open diffs). As I was turning around I saw a Samari comming down. He said that the by pass to the rock garden was closed and that there is still snow on the road past the rock garden that he was not able to get past.
He was skeptical that I would be able to make it past the rock garden without being locked. Again I have never been up there before and I just thought that I would pass it on.
Some other information. The road past tibble fork has had some work done on it in some places. It is still uncomforable but better than I remeber it last year. Most of the time I was able to go 15 -25 mph. The park pass is $3.00 and you can pay with a credit card you do not need cash.

I think you did the right thing. That is a sensitive area and we shouldn't be digging holes in the trails. It's still going to be run-off at that elevation.
Kind of an FYI on the Rockgarden 'bypass'. U4WDA and members of RME {www.rockymountainextreme.com} CLOSED the bypass with the blessing and assistance of the forest service. PASS IT ALONG..........tread lightly means don' t run over any living thing (plants) and there were a few trees cut down to make the bypass. The Forest Service asked how they could educate people to not do that and I have no ideas.............
The whole of American Fork canyon is monitored quite closely and we need to be careful what we and other users are doing to the area. Please try to educate other users to 'proper' use of existing roads..........

I'm still going. Forest Lake trail is not as high elevation as the rock Garden, so we may be O.K. The trail is passable for stock rigs as well. If we get turned around by snow, we can just start a new adventure somewhere else. I'm looking forward to a possible discussion about opening a chapter here.

Good point Marc, the reclaimation of the area surrounding the Rock Garden will be under heavy scrutiny by the Forest Service and as we learned, they are watching for violations of trail and road usage VERY closely. Unfortuantly, I was unable to make it to the re-vegetation party's in AFC in the past, but I hope to be involved in future projects.
:soapbox:
Keep in mind.....we are under the magnifying glass of the Green faction that would prefer to have parking lots at trail heads with signs that prohibit the use of mechanical forms of transportation on these trails.
It is the few that screw things up for the many, and also draws attention from the opposition that wants to lump all ATV and 4x4 enthusiests into one catagory......."a bunch of beer drinking, mud slinging yahoo's that go where they want, when they want".
It is this stigma that must be overcome, and through education and setting a good example for other trail users, we can show that we care more about the enviroment and proper land use than 90% of the so-called enviromentalist that think that saving the wilderness means writing a check to their favorite cause, for charity sake.
Tread Lightly is an attitude, which directly effects the future of our sport.
I hope I can make it this weekend and meet all of you local XJers that I have yet to meet and have a good day on the trail, no matter where we wind up.

9:00AM Firm for everyone @ tibble fork res. parking lot. I have set up a prize drawing when we get to the top for all those who show. It 's nothing big but can be very useful for some I would think. Rules?: One pick per JEEP driver/owner should be fun. Also, going to bring digital camera to see if we can get a good shot for the " rig of the month " in NAXJA. See you all there drive safe. later

so are we runnin MB first or Forest Lake first?
David B
June 6th, 2003, 11:05
9:00 for sure. I say we venture up Forest Lake first and either meet stragglers up there or on the way back (Marc). Either way, we can decide up at Tibble (General Consensus - I've never been comfortable making decisions for a group of 10+ people). Prize drawings are always fun. We are well on our way to a local chapter and hopefully some sponsors.

Just head up AF canyon, and a little past the Timpanogos Cave Station, is a fork in the road, turn left, and head up until you run into the parking lot you can't miss it. Pretty sure there is a sign for the turn off that says ":arrowl: Tibblefork Reservior:arrowl: "

"Son of a B#$%$!!!" Well count me out, I'm really sorry guys, I was lookin forward to this soo much this whole week. Well last Sunday after wheelin my front driveshaft sheered the nuts off, the ones that hold the DS to the transfer case yoke, and I guess when it was banging around it hit and broke off the linkage to the 4 wheel drive!!! I just barely got my DS back on, and went to test out the 4wd and the lever is not connected to anything, so I'm screwed for now, hope we can all get another trip planned soon. After I get this fixed, geez.:anon: :(

Hey I just wanted to say thanks for letting me and my friend (CJ-John) come along. It was a fun, the trail was fun to. You guys are really nice and pleasant to be around. I don't like to complain but there are just some people out there who are into this, that are just.......well you know.
I took a few pics and posted them on webshots.....for some reason, there were a few that that website couldn't or wouldn't download and I can't figure out why! :(

great pics. We really had a wonderful time and would like to do it again real soon. For those of you who missed out I feel very sorry. We all ended up getting prizes because our numbers were so few. I think I got the best prize, an Atlas II, but TPS's ARB's for front AND rear sure were nice too. Thanks Climbon! j/k I really hope we get serious about creating a local chapter. I would be willing to devote some time to that, but we will need a lot of help. I think more of these trail rides will help all of us to get to know each other and it should be easier at that time to get a chapter up and going. Someone was talking about a Bountiful canyon run next. When and where?

It was a good time on Saturday. Bountiful Ridge sounds fun. There is also a little Canyon called North Canyon that is good that is the first canyon past the gravel pits in North Salt Lake that is a good ride also. I spend a lot of time at both because it is so close to me. Any one up for it in the next couple of weeks?
Thanks again climbon for the great prizes. I hope you weren't to late for your wife.

I still don't know what my overheating problem is/was, but still had a good time even though I was severly late and slightly distracted with the cooling woes. Thanks for the assistance of the high-lift and everything..........saved my tranny pan and kept me from being disabled on the trail so I wouldn't need a tow down.
I did bend a 'Go-Fer-It' tie rod (quite an accomplishment, IMHO) when my front tire slipped off a rock. I can't bend it back with a bottle jack and it on the vehicle, so it's a decent grade of steel at very worst. On to the hydraulic press...........

I also had a great time on Saturday! arrived back from Flaming Gorge at 2:00 am that morning so didn't know of the time change. I'm glad I caught up to you all at the turn off to Forest Lake. I kept looking behind me for a "Teal" Cherokee though as I arrived
I'll try and post some pics soon, got some good ones of mbryson's overheating junk and that YJ hung up on the same rock!
Looking foreward to future events with this group. as we came down from Forest Lake I spoke with some of the quad drivers, one guy asked how my stock Cherokee was doing, the younger guy that was with him said he also has an XJ, told him to check out NAXJA on the web!

Alright, I am back from the land of AZ. It was 115 and our new yuppie Volvo started complaining on us. Never had a heat problem with the ol' straight six. I need to know who is interested in starting a Utah chapter as was discussed up at mineral basin. There is a new Wingers just off I-15 at the Lehi exit, I thought we could meet there to get things rolling. DavidB and Mbryson you both sounded serious with this, let me know how we need to approach this thing as far as people you can get in touch with to start the ball rolling. Is Wingers on the 25th of June cool with anyone interested? let me know I can be there.

Sorry, but I'm not too up to date on trails down here. Like I mentioned, I'm from the mountains of the North, and this desert stuff is new to me...I've heard rumor of a couple of trails, one of them I'm hitting this weekend and I'll let you know if it's worth while. Basically everything I've come across down here has either been too much for my XJ to handle or graded such that a passenger car can make it across, and these are the trails that haven't been closed down to motorized travel.
I'll keep my ears open to any trails that might be out there, but it seems everyone down here has a 4x4 of some sort but no one uses them.
I can tell ya that I'm interested in a Utah chapter too...I won't be able to make it to the organization meeting up North so don't forget about me.

I hope it turnes out better than my friend that has the 71 bronco. He had Big-O put in a detroit in his rear D44 and last time at Little Moab his axel broke, no big deal. Well, we took everything apart the other day and the installer didn't tighten down the cap bolts for the locker and everything was thrashed. The whole assemble, pinnion, locker shreaded. Pretty crazy. I have faith that JR will do me proud though. I am dropping off my XJ after work today. Should be done before the week is over.
