original shocks ?

I have a new to me 99XJ sport. I am trying to figure out if the shocks have ever been replaced. Were the original shocks fitted with a plastic cover over the slider? thanks in advance.

01 new to me also. Black with plastic. I am debating whether or not they are worth a poot. Mine seem to be worn in and around the first couple inches of travel. That is, they give real easy right off neutral point. I am leaning towards the KYB product.
