I noticed on my 98 auto that if i start out and accel hard in 1-2 position, let it get into second then shift into 3 position while acceling in second, the jeep all of the sudden accels much quicker. I mean I can watch the rpms just shoot up quicker and hear the engine rev easily like a load was let off, not like slipping, just like the converter unlocked or it hit a lower gear. weird. Is the torque converter locked earlier in 1-2 for engine braking or somthing? I might be able to explain it better if needed.

Jeep shifts well and normal (from my experiences with other autos). Ive had this thing for only a few months now.

insight?

thanks

Yes, the torque converter locks in 2 when in "1-2," waits until 3 in "3" and locks in both 3 and 4 in D. So if you start off in 1-2, then shift to 3 it will unlock at least for a while.

Thats what i figured, thanks for the info.

I think it actually locks in 2 under heavy accel. I think the threshold is 80%? It does this whether in 1-2 or 3 position. This shift logic may have changed during the years, but I remember seeing it in one of the AW4 manuals for earlier models.
