I'm in Irvine and was wondering if any of you could point me to someone fairly local who could trim the front of my fenders up to the headlights so I can mount a 97+ style winch bumper.I'm looking for a real clean job and just don't trust my hacking skills at this point. Thanks Guys..........................Chris

Hey gang,
I need front & rear trimming. XJOHNNYC also needs more trimming.
Maybe we can get a trimming party together? :repair:
We are ALL in OC.
I have not trimmed fenders before. I popped my right rear flare off last week, so today I removed the left one. I running flareless (rear) right now. Bot, it's gonna throw some mud on Saturday (Big Bear trip).
Unfortunately I do not have enough space or I would offer up my garage.
I will pay for food & beverage.
Thanks,
Robert

I'm willing to show up and help if you guys do it mid January. I'd offer my driveway but now that the camping trailer is parked on it again it's kind of packed and crowded.

LOL My compressor got wheels... but I wouldn't call it portable :) From my experience metal shears do a pretty nice job on the fronts and only the rears needs some sort of a cutting utility.

I have my CO2 tank...which would be enough to do my fenders. :D

An air body saw makes nice even cuts and can get into smaller areas that shears can't. It was only a suggestion. Later.

Well, I have my OBA in my rig, but I really don't want to use it just for trimming.

I am OK to do it in mid-Jan. I am willing to look into buying some type of air compressor. Any ideas? I am thinking of a small one that I can use at home but have no problem tossing in the rear of the XJ to take to someone's house to use. Heck, maybe even get a DC converter of some sort...LOL.
Seriously, I will be getting a compressor and can bring it. Maybe Santa will bring it... :laugh3:

keep in mind that if it's going to be too small the saw might have a hard time running on it....

I am thinking of something like a 15 gal, 3 HP Craftsman type for the garage and the Viair VIA40043 400P Portable Compressor for the trails.
Would a smaller compressor, like the carpentry type compressor, provide enough air? It'3 2 HP, 4 GAL and portable.

When I finally get a compressor it will be no less than a 5hp 25 gallon unit. It is just the right size to still be easily portable around the grage and to take to a buddys house. HTH.

Hey if this gets goin for mid-Jan, I may be willing to chip in some for beer/pizza. I'd like to trim a little on mine. Could I trim enough in the rear to clear a set of 30x9.5" MTs? I know most people can clear them stock, but mine doesn't...I've been lookinat a BB but if I can trim that's better and cheaper. Well, cheaper at least.

Depending on when you do the trimming party and where, I have a 33 gallon, 6 hp Craftsman Aircompressor that I just bought that I would be willing to bring up if I can get some help trimming my fenders.

Although a trail in Big Bear already started my trimming job for me, I could definately use some trimming.
Keep me posted on details. I will be glad to eat free pizza and get some trimming help....
i mean... chip in for pizza... yeah that's it :)

Sounds like all we need is a place to have the "party". We can have a couple of compressors and several metal shears (or cutting device). The only other thing is a solid date! I am suggesting the weekend of Jan 22-23rd. I prefer Saturday.
Anybody able to provide a driveway or garage? I will ask my mother-in-law. She lives in Torrance (the nice are), has a driveway that we canfit two or three at a time and planty of street parking.
Most of us are in OC and it would probably be better to find a place here.
Thanks,
Robert

How about you look at the calendar first. 22/23rd has Calico written on it and I think that quite a few people would want to go there. Try for a weekend before that maybe.

OOPPSS!..Sorry about that.
The weekend before is Superstition (SD 4 Wheelers). Is everyone available for end of Jan? Weekend of Jan 29th?
I am open to any weekend. I know not everyone can/will be going on the runs at Calico (though I would to go) or Superstition.
Maybe we can get a poll or something and get this thing planned.
I don't know how to do a poll. but if some body can, maybe put in a couple of weekends in Jan & Feb.???
Thanks,
Robert

The best tools for trimming fenders is a jig saw with metal blades and or an air nibler. I have trimmed my fenders and others and found that saber saws move the fender to much and are too big, grinder and cutoff wheels air or otherwise take to much time and dont cut around corners very well. The jigsaw works the best. Just my opinion but I urge you to try on some scrap.

OK, to those that haven't trimmed their fenders before:
1. plan how you wanna do it (are you just trimming or putting different flares on?)
2. have some paint or something to finish things up
I'll bring my regular tools with me as well as the sheet metal vicegrips (they are nice for folding the sheet metal back). Other stuff that will be useful would include: files, shears, air saws, die grinder, angle grinders and so on.
Anyways, how much trimming needs to be done to whose rig?

Saturday, the 15th is better for me. But I could make it on the 16th.
Stephen just bought that compressor from Wade, so that's taken care of. :D
Personally, I was hoping to trim enough to fit 33s and relocating the stock flares a little higher.

I have to work that morning. How many people are going to be at this thing? How many XJ's gettin' a trim? I think someone said that we can do both or either Saturday/Sunday?
Maybe we should firm some things up..Who? How many? Where (address)? When (date(s) & time)? What tools? And what needs to be done in preparation (remove flares)?
just my 2 cents...
Thanks,
Robert

I have to check with the wif but I think the 15th is open for me. For anyone with a black XJ I could bring my black spray paint (its just flat black "rust-protection" stuff, but it'll do the job). I read someone said they were relocate stock flares higher, and that's the route I'd like to go. Does that require any additional gear (drill new holes whatever)? Like I said, I have to talk to my wife, but I see no problems. Free mod, improve tire fitment and stuffage, learn a little about doin stuff to my Cherokee...:D

I have a small compressor that is able to do the job. Ive done 3 XJ's using an air body saw and die grinder. I've put on TJ Flares, Bushwackers and relocated the stock ones but it can be a pain if they strip. Air Body saw makes nice cuts, you should do the TJ flares with this cause of the many curves. Die grinder makes very nice straight cuts good for trimming and relocating oem flares higher. I recomend Rust Cap or rustolem rattle can paint close as you can get to your original color. You're welcome to come by or i can if your not too far.
