87 XJ, 89 4.0, auto, 4x4, 4 door. 260k on tranny.
When getting into the pedal from a stop, the jeep rolls slow and makes a funny noise, then i let out of it and it takes off. Like slipping or something, cant describe the noise, but its like a hissing with a bit of slight grinding or something like that, the best i can describe it. Time for an overhaul or can something other than an oil change correct that? Havent done a fluid change in about 40k, did it when i bought the XJ at 220K.

I don't really understand all of what you are discribing...

It doesn't move that well from a roll? It makes a grinding noise when you are on the throttle? When you let off the throttle, does the noise go away or change?

Is there the same noise when you manually put it in first gear/low?

It sounds to me that the roller clutch is bad.
