What size nut does one need to make a spanner tool for the 8.25?
Does any one know the bearing PNs for the limited slip?
I am using 4.56:1 Gears that are on the detroit. will they fit on the LS?
are the bolts holding the ring gear reversed thread? any help would be great. Thanks.
I am swapping out a detroit for a factory limited slip. The detroit is too noisy, and jerky, and this thing is a road driver mostly. all this is in a 01 manual XJ.

I know this isn't the question that you asked but have you looked into the cause of that behaviour? I run a detroit (although in the 44) and I know quite a few people who have detroits (some in 8.25) as well and they are near transparent. So if you haven't done it already, before you put the limited slip back in, why not try and find out why the detroit is making all those noises? Is your pressure in teh rear tires even? are the tires even size? What oil do you run in the diff: dino or synth? 75/90 or 75/140?

This'll help you make the diff. adjusters. (http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=38758)
Don't know the bearing P/N. Check at Napa online.
Yes the gears will fit on the LS
Yes, the bolts are reverse tread
Send me a PM if you want to unload that Detroit.

In response to your question this detroit has a lot of backlash, and with the manual transmission, 32 inch tires, (I want to run 33s, or 35s eventually) and 4.56 gears its really noticable when shifting, and when the jeep goes from coast to drive to coast. The diff was installed at a good shop, and just to double check I checked the backlash, and at the gear the backlash is normal, so its set up right, but the detroit its self adds some backlash which is what causes the undesirable effects(the instructions said some extra backlash is normal 30 to 90 degrees at the dshaft from the instalation instructions?) . I love the traction, and the gearing makes any dirty, snowy, wet, or even dry road a blast to drive on (sideways is easy, drift for Jeeps) but all the clunking and noises are annoying in a daily driver. I also worry about the transmission getting dammaged from the backlash, I dont baby the thing, I drive the snott out of it. I run just regular old 90 weight gear oil. The LS is also free from a buddy of mine. what are your thoughts on the detroit?

Well I've had the stock traclock in my 8.25 and it was quiet it behaved nicely. Then I put in 4.11's and I still didn't hear any extra noise. Not too long after I put in a no slip (used) to replace the dead trac lock and I still had no problems with the 8.25. Currently I have a D44 with 4.88's, stick shift, detroit and 33's and on the street it doesn't feel much different. I do feel it lock up if I really steup on it (especially on a curve) but for normal driving (rush hour traffic through Los Angeles downtow) it's behaving really nice. Also, I don't baby it on the trail either, and I have no problems with it there ither. I run synth blend (valvoline) 80/140 in it though, which I was told is supposed to make it behave really nicely. If I was you I'd play with it a bit more before removing it. It is also entirely possible that while your axle seems to be setup right it could be setup better (closer to spec). Especially since as you're detroit has some backlash in it, you might want to make sure the your gears are setup for as little backlash as possible (still within spec though). The 8.25 are supposed to be PITA to setup and not everyone can do it right.
Btw, where are you located at? as there might be someone here that's local that might be able to take a look at it and give you a second opinion, or at the very least recommend a shop that could look at it for you. If you're near SoCal I can think of 3 places that might be able to help you.

I am in central NC, and will be going to school in southeastern ohio this winter. I would love a second opinion on the detroit. I do love the traction, but one of the best shops around here put the no slip in, and although he (the guy who owns the shop) agrees that its the loudest detroit he has ever heard, or driven, it is within the specs of the instructions. the truth is I dont need a locker in it, I have two other trail rigs to play with, and The XJ in question would be a DD if it did not lock, and unlock so noticably all the time. its sort of embarrasing to drive, the tires squeel around corners, and the excess backlass makes it look like I dont know how to drive a stick. I also have a flatfender with a detroit in the dana 44 with 5.38 gears, and it is not nearly as noticable as the one in my 8.25. I always just chlaked it up to differences in the detroits. Tanks for your advice though.

I don't know if its the fact that you are running a manual tranny and I have an automatic, but I just threw a detroit in my 8.25 over the Thanksgiving break and it is far, far quieter and well mannered than I expected it to be. It only makes noticeable clunks when I am backing out of a parking spot and then put the tranny into drive. I do notice a slight thump when I get on and off the gas while cruising down the road as well, but only when I'm paying attention to it. I actually was worried that it wasn't locking at all until I found a ramp nearby to drive the left front tire up and the jeep kept going up the ramp even when the left rear tire came up off the ground.
So, I guess what I'm saying is that if you know it was set up right, maybe the detroit is faulty itself. Your trouble seems out of the ordinary to me.
