Does year matter for shocks?

Might be a stupid question. But just curious if the year of the cherokee makes any difference as far as the shock goes? Don't think it would but wanted to check as far as stock or lifted in this case.
Thanks,
duke

I think something changed in '91. All the application charts I have list different part numbers for 84-90 and then 91-01. Stock application.

The rear shocks are the same for all years. As noted, the 91 and newer are different. They are slightly longer, but the difference is very slight. Don't know why it's different, and I think you could probably use either listing in any year XJ without any problem.
