I have a annoying noise(squeal) coming from the column when I turn the wheel...it's not constant. It's worse when it's cold...it also changes in volume and frequency when I adjust the steering height. Is it something I should be concerned with? Is there something I could lube in there? I did a search, but found nothing. BTW - 97 cherokee sport, 4 door, 4.0 and AW4 trans. It just turned 100K. Thanks in advance.

My 98 Limited does the exact same thing, especially noticeable when it is cold outside. Anyone have a fix?

lube the steering column shaft where it goes into the boot under the dash with some white lithium grease, and coat the shaft thoroughly. you can move the boot around so when it goes back in place, the boot is lubed from the shaft turning

I bought a used 98 XJ this past spring. Mine started doing the same thing a few weeks ago. Gonna try the grease. Hope it works as it is annoying as hell.

I have the same exact issue and after some observations found out that the squeek was not occuring under the dash but rather the joint after the firewall that attaches the steering column to the power steering box. It seems that there is a plastic tab that moves freely a bit when i move the steering wheel and it squeeks ?

Also when you guys say above to lubricate the steering column shaft i am not sure how that can be done as the whole shaft is encased in a metal pipe thing ?

Well folks i had some time today and was able to kinda observe where the squeel is coming from but unsure why it is?

This is the shaft that connects the steering colum to the steering box.

You cant see it in the pic but there is some kind of tab in the joint that whenever i turn the steering wheel it spins to the right and the leeft and squeels.

Anyone have any ideas ?

I tried all of these things - and none of them worked. Lubed the steering column with everything except chicken grease! Finally, a mechanic told me to get Lucas Power Steering Fluid and the problem disappeared within minutes!!!!!

Empty out the pump, add the Lucas PSF, then add more fluid until it's full. No muss, no fuss....and problem solved!!!

My 97 has the squeak too, only when its cold, and it kinda makes me chuckle the sound it makes. Turn the radio up, it goes away.
