Rebuilding steering box

Has anyone done this? I have about an 1/8" of play in the output shaft (which explains the leaking fluid) and was wondering if there are replaceable bearings inside.
Would rather rebuild than spend $350 on replacement.

I believe West Texas Offroad makes a rebuild kit.

Ashman did a writeup on the rebuild when he converted to hydraulic steering...it's either here or on pirate I can't remember.

Try www.larescorp.com , got about any steering gear you can imagine and will build custom boxes. My last XJ box was $125, plus $20 core charge.

I'll be glad to help you take it apart...

:D

Dang! You didn't consider upgrading to the j10 (or is it 20?) box?
Ask Intrepid, I think he scored one by accident a while back...

Rebuilding the Saginaw power steering box is kind of a PITA, unless you have the special tools. Unless you are interested in doing the overhaul as a learning experience, I would just recommend buying a good used box from the local boneyard. They are widely available for pretty cheap prices.
