I found a lot on this, but not what I need. I have a Toy 8" from an 89' 4 Runner. It is wider than the earlier models, but I don't know how it compares to the XJ in width. I was about to buy an 8.8 and found out that some folks use the 8". From what I have gathered here...
You can't redrill the axle for 5 on 4.5 but you can use a spacer to adapt.
You have to buy a flange to u-bolt adapter
Thought I would look into it since I already own one of these. I would measure, but the rear is at my buddy's business all locked up for the holidays.
Thanks

I looked into this awhile ago and think its a great upgrade.Toy guy run 37s on those rears no problem. It should be around 58 wide so perfect fit after you put the spacers on.

i think the yota axles is under rated by everyone except the yota guys.. i have a friend with a yota p/u running a built 4.3 and 44" boggers and a spool with stock axles shafts.. the only weak point is his front birfield CV joints....

How much spacer would be needed on each side? I'm not a huge fan of spacers, but if they serve the purpose and save some $$ then I'll try them.

The 4-runner axles are 60" wide......the IFS p/u axles are 58.5" wide..... I just picked up a Tacoma rear yesterday.... 2wd, v6 = 5x4.5 BP........ I can get a 91 4 runner rear for $85.... was thinking about trying to swap the taco shafts/brakes to the 4 runner housing.......That way I could have the 8" housing in a 5x4.5 BP......
Be advised.... The width of my rear leafs outside-outside was 46"...... the inside-inside width of the shaft retaining bolts are 48" on the IFS 58.5" axle...... That's why I went with a Taco axle instead... it's 60" wide......

you will almost certainly have to inboard your leafs. other than that, it's a great swap. I have an '88 8" in my MJ. Get the 1310 flange from Jesse at High Angle Driveline, or if you're going to need a new driveshaft anyway, get one with a Toyota joint on the axle end, Toyota joints are really good. You'll also have to adapt the brakelines to 10mm, it's real easy with a double flare tool that most part stores will let you borrow for free.

So If I have the wider (60 inch) rear, I won't need to inboard my leaf springs? MC92 and Brett - How did you make up for the difference in width between the Jeep part and the Toy rear?

I run the 58.5" rear, but I have an MJ which has the springs narrower than an XJ. SafariAry put a Toy axle in an XJ, he used a 60" one and said the leafs still barely clear the brakes. Inboarding the leafs isn't a bad idea, put them under the "frame" rail, but you'll probably want to add a few leafs or a swaybar.
