This video is very well done, and was compiled by the 101st Airborne. It is a large download (100 or so megs), so I suggest saving it to your computer before viewing it.

What do you want to be?!

AIRBORNE!

What do you really want to be?!

PARATROOPER, PARATROOPER, PARATROOPER

You will never be a Paratrooper until your mission is accomplished, and you never quit. AIRBORNE!

But the 101st is ONLY airborne by name! There is 1 company in the entire division that still jumps. I am in Special Forces and 82nd before that, we are airborne!

True, but that is hardly the mission these days. The make-up of the Division is pretty good. As I am sure you are aware, with modern equipment and tactics, there is no need to drop thousands of soldiers from the sky anymore. Those guys with the pretty planes and Smart Bombs and Missles take care of that aspect. :) I was in the 502d Inf. 101st. But you would never (ever) get me to jump out of a perfectly good aircraft. No way. :) I still preferred the 2d ACR though... driving sure beats wearing out LPC's (Leather Personel Carriers or boots, for those curious).

Yup. The Divison released that to showcase that the Armed Forces are doing much more than what we see on the news. Lots of positive things are being done..... but the press does not show a whole lot of that aspect.

I dunno that the Airborne mode of delivery is outmoded just yet... Nothing in the US arsenal says "We like this place" more effectively than dropping a Battalion of Rangers on it... I mean if we want to pulverize or poison it, we got that way covered, but if we want to 'borrow' a little piece of ground for awhile - or break something really badly, they're just the folks to call.

I certainly hope that there is never another need for massive multi-divisional jumps a'la Normandy or Arnhem... Things would be bad if that was called for again. OTOH the reality is that once ya get some boots on the ground and doing squad-level ops, it's all about the same.
