If it is cable driven, remove the cable housing from the back of the speedometer. Pull the cable out of the housing. If the cable is really dirty, remove the housing from the transmission end and squirt some cleaner into the housing from the top to flush it out. Clean off the cable and then coat it with a film of white lithium grease. When re-installing, you will need to twist and push the cable in the housing until it stabs into the gear at the transmission.
